Transferring data x86-C128D
Hello people.
I recently downloaded a couple of weeks worth of SID's to my PC, but of course, they don't sound the way they should since the SID is emulated. I'm considering buying a HardSID chip or a SIDStation, but it's a bit too much cash for the occasional nostalgia trip. Besides, I have an old C128D so if possible, I might as well use that, hook it up to my stereo and listen to the music sounding the way the Creator meant it to.
So the problem is, of course, getting those SIDs to play on my C128D. I've heard rumours that C64/128 tapes can be converted via a regular stereo system. Is this true, and if so, what kind of software do I need to make the opposite conversion with the same equipment? If it isn't, do I have to buy a 5 1/4" disc drive for my PC, get the appropriate software and transfer it that way, or is there a simpler method?
Thanks in advance. |

you can ofcause xfer all the sids to the C64 (or C128), remove the extra sid-header and play them as normal.
but... (dunno if you use windows but anyway:)
Sidplay for win32 can play sid-files by sending them to the C64 through a PC64-cable, and play them on the C64, without you have to do anything else than clicking on the the sid-file in windows (so you don't have to manually transfer the SID to the C64 and play it - sidplay does it for you)
( you can buy a PC64 cable at http://sta.c64.org/x1541shop.html )
(my C128D just broke so i can't explain it in detail right now - but maybe others can...) |

If you had a Retro Replay then you could use Groepaz's rr.exe via null modem cable (if you had the Serial Surfer RS232 interface too). Works a treat. |

Hmm, that cable solution sounds dandy. Gotta try that. Thanks. |

Anyway, I think the original question was also if it is possible to transfer from PC directly to the C128D via the built in 1571.
Something which I also personally would be interested in. :-)

By the way...
you can't use C64 disks in a 5 1/4" drive for the PC because the PC's floppy-diskcontroller is very bad (and you can't use AMIGA disks in the PC's 3½" drive for the same reason). (Atleast this is what i've been told by some hardware-gurus)
You can do it though if you replace the PC's diskcontroller by a better one (i think that better one is called "Catweasel")
However, the Sidplay/PC64-cable solution is much easier and cheaper... Just wanted to let you know this. |

But the 1571 and 1581 are capable of reading DD MS-DOS disks with the Big Blue Reader or Little Red Reader. You can read 180k/360k MS-DOS floppies in the 1571 and 720k floppies in the 1581.
