MW4 bug?

Hi all, especially Cadaver,

I got myself the latest update of MW4 yesterday to try it with my newly aquired Jiffy enhanced 1581 and a 1750 REU.

Now here's what happens:
I turn off the fastloader and enable the REU buffering. It loads and buffers everything in about two minutes, but after the last file it quits with a blinking red drive LED, which indicates some sort of error.
Now if i want to save the game it shortly accesses the drive and then happily continues blinking with the red LED. Resetting the drive or disabling Jiffy while it's running doesn't help either.
Of course, after resetting the C64 and trying to load the game, it doesn't work... :-(

Any clue on how to get it to work?
Thanks in advance!

First of all, it's normal for the buffering to end with LED blinking, because in the end it tries to load a nonexisting file and that's how it decides it's time to end the buffering.

I don't have access to JiffyDOS so can't really comment on that, and even to real REU or 1581, so only tests I conducted were on VICE with REU+1581+true drive emulation. Both the multifile & onefile-data versions loaded themselves, buffered, and then saved/loaded games without problems.. Also, for reference, tested on 1541+REU without ingame fastloader.

In theory Kernal file access should always work the same, regardless of device.

You might want to see if you can actually write files to your MW4 directory OK, and try if switching to the onefile-data version (mw4one.zip) helps. But as I said, in theory there should be no difference.

Do others with 1581s have experiences in this? I thought that comp.sys.cbm denizens with weird HW setups :) would have been quite vocal if there is indeed a problem with the game..

Hahaha! I had the write protection enabled, somebody please shoot me... :-P
Seems I didn't even care to check, as I near to 100% sure that the blinking LED shows an error and hence it was a problem in the game itself...

Sorry for the fuzz, now everything works fine.

By the way: The mw4one version buffers all the data about twice as fast as the single file version! Maximum respect!
