Last Ninja 3 Intro in SidPlay 2 versus SIDPlug
G'day!
Hope this fits in this devision.
I asked a lot of sceners about it but either they could not answer or misunderstood it.
So, here is my experience/question:
Playing "Last Ninja 3" (sing 3 out of 10) with "SIDPlug" brings a stereo effect for voice 1 moving randomly from left to right.
SidPlay2 / w only brings mono or peseudo SID (voice 1 only left and 2 and 3 in right channel).
Why is that?!
Why does it play in real stereo on SIDPlug but not real stereo on SIDPlay2/w?
Or do I something wrong?
Thanks in avdance!
All the best!
Bye!
Joerg

SidPlug author should be prosecuted for adding functionality that has nothing to do with real hardware :)
Responsible www authors could add STEREO=false to plugin command line..

Great, thanks Lasse!
But well, it sounds amazing! Why it does only work for few SIDs like Last Ninja 3 intro?

Maybe it detects filter in use on channel 1 and decides to mirror the filter cutoff modulation to panning.. Or calculates some occult value based on all sid regs and decides to turn that effect on, who knows :) |

i think its all based on a simple physical effect... ppl familiar to "real world" music maybe know how a "stereo chorus/flanger/phaser" works... you put out the same signal on two channels with a small phase offset, add some modulation (different on both channels) and it will result in a strange "pseudo stereo" effect... thats probably whats happening, i dont think there is special code for simulating stereo in sidplug (if it was, it'd work better :=P) |

I've only got experience with the Mac version, but I', pretty sure that it has an "auto-panning" thing going on. Usually you can't hear it, it just sounds as if voice #1 is to the left, voice #2 to the right, etc., but if a voice stays active for a few seconds, it'll switch to the other side, or pan, as it were. I think that Andreas Vargas' excellent Mac version of SIDplay also has an "enable auto-panning" option in the preferences, which is disabled if you're using external emulation like reSID or something.

Yep, it's auto-panning, definitely. Don't know details, but I noticed this with a lot of tune that I listened to in Sidplug over my headphones. Sounds pretty cool! :-)
From the readme.html included in Sidplug:
>>>
SURROUND=true or false
to enable/disable stereo surround.
Default: false
PANNING=0 or 1 or 2
to select no auto-panning (0), normal auto-panning (1, deprecated!) or centered auto-panning (2).
Default: 2
>>>
See, it even has surround support! :-o |

Well, yes, I saw the manual once but seems I have not understood it really (Or did pay too much attention). (I didn't do so often use headphones back then but since September 2003 I do and I just thought: "Hey! What is that cool thing?"), etc.
All the best!
Bye!
