Quick depacker for replaying charset-screen-Animation

On the train back home i was toying around with converting a GIF animation to c64 mcol-charsets and -screens.

That led me to the question if there some readymade decent packer and depacker to in-mem replay an animation with like 25fps depacking each frame into a charset and screen?

Ofcourse there are many packers around (that i am aware), but which would be about the best? Best as in fast depack with some sort of compression along (optional of sorts)?

Maybe one could get even a step further and compress screens and charsets separate and signal all along on when to decompress the next charset when needed.

As mentioned in the replies to the facebook thread you started at the same time as this post, there are a heap of animation specific ways of packing the indices, but not much in the way of off the shelf tools for that.

What might be worth trying though, is use Algo's CSAM to generate a heap of screens with only one to four charsets between them, then use a generic cruncher on groups of four or eight screens. If the sliding window is long enough, it'll just copy common areas from preceding frames.

Assuming pre-decrunched charsets, either of TinyCrunch V1.0 or LZWVL should be fast enough at decrunching the screens on the fly for the frame rate target you suggested.
