c64 components

Hi 8-bit gurus,

I didn't find the exactly correct area for posting this, but this is the closest one so here it goes:

A local school has a bunch of old c64 parts in their storage room. I'm gonna buy the SIDs from there, but since I'm going there, I must ask: What other parts might be worth buying/taking? I mean like processors etc... I guess they would only be useful for fixing broken 64's, but do people usually even try to fix broken C64's? Please tell me what might be useful or what you need and I'll check if they have it!

Thanks in advance!

when I wanted to take all the commodore stuff from my former school they said something that's rather impossible - even if those machines were lying unused for years , unregistered from equipment index and so on... I asked about it several times ... all the stuff probably went to recycle bin already :(

(yeah , they used C64s in mid 90' to teach IT :) , since cicra 1997 they have PCs , and commodores were used as game machines for some time but later got exchanged with playstation - when I moved to that school in 1999 there were no visible commodores here - only some in basements ;p )

grab as much as you can, motherboards are the most useful as they are easy to fit but I would be inclined to grab as much of the gear as possible' take a bit, take it all'

OK, thanks for the tips! I'm gonna visit the place in a few weeks. One more thing: What are the codes for the crucial chips (except for SID's)? I'm not sure if they've got them sorted in a logical way, so I've got no clue how to identify a video chip etc.

I did visit the place like 5 (or more) years ago and got two 6581R4's for free. They said they'll check the price for the rest of the SID's and I can come back later to buy them. Unfortunately it was difficult to reach the teachers by phone, and I moved (or had moved) to another city, so... I just kinda forgot about it. Yes, I need a kick in the butt. Fortunately they didn't throw the chips away when they cleaned the place a while ago, and this time I'm gonna get them for sure. Hopefully they don't want any insane price for the SID's or the rest of the chips.

Forgot one thing:

A problem with my old-style C64 is the following: The SID sounds very distorted, it sounds like if the ring modulation is on all the time. Changing the SID didn't help... So what component might have gone bad if it's not the SID? I could try to look for this part from the place where I'll get the bunch of SID's etc.

Thanks in advance!

if this is filter-concerned - you may try to solder new pair of monolytic capacitors on pins 1-2 , 3-4

on other hand:
if you take sound+video from modulator this may be modulator issue , if you use sound output from a/v socket this may be preamplifier issue.

here are some chip labels... 65xx are for older and 85xx are for newer c64s...

6510 / 8500 - cpu
6581 /6582 / 8580 - sid
8565 / 6567 (?) - generally 856x and 656x are video chips ;-)
6526 (no 85xx xhip here - only 8520 is very similiar but not used in c64 even if it actually works - I exchanged the keyboard controlling chip some time ago and all was fine) - CIA

roms have special labelling - I'm too lazy just now to check them all ;-)

I've had oportunities like these twice in the past 10 years
and each time I took everything I could fit into my car.

Once this stuff is gone there's no way to get it again so
dont think twice, take it all.

Hi,

I've forgotten to tell you that I went to the school to get the parts. They had a box filled with C64 chips. I got 9 6581R4's for free, and a couple of main CPU's. They didn't want to sell the whole bunch, but if I need something I can ask them.

The point of telling that I got the bunch of SIDs for free is not to brag but to give motivation for others who know of a possible source, like a school, for C64-stuff. Go get 'em! :)

Oh, and thanks for the information on the various parts.

I can't believe there are still schools on this planet that still have C64s in their storage rooms! Well, actually I'm not too surprised, as I only left school about 3 years ago and they still use BBC Micros for their physics classes :P

At my highschool we upgraded from Microbees (awesome machines) to Amiga 1000s as soon as they were released.

Those were the days. c64 at home, amiga 1000 at school.
