help - no boot
Hi,
Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, but it's hard finding support areas for the ole C64...
My neighbor passed on his old C64 - everything is in really fine shape, at least, so it looks. 1541 floppy and lots of games and applications.
So following the manual I hooked it up to a TV, turn it on, and nothing.
I can tell there's a video signal because the TV stops showing 'snow' and shows a blank, black screen. But no initialization message every displays. The power LED on the C64 itself illuminates, and as said, the TV gets a signal.
So how can I troubleshoot this? Any way to tell if this system works? Am I missing a step?
Any help much appreciated! Even pointers to online resources which may address this problem.
Thanks!

Try first another antenne-cable between the c64 and the TV. If it still doesn't show anything on the TV, then it is possible that something is wrong with that c64... |

Thanks for the reply. Will try another RCA cable, can't hurt.
Also found
http://www.8bitdesigns.com
which suggests this is a common problem, I assume noting the age of these machines, and lists a few things to try.
Always happy to hear more ideas! But think I've got a path to wander for now.
Thanks!

Check here: http://zimmers.net/commie/repair.html
Or even better refer to the usenet group comp.sys.cbm for hardware support. |

Thanks! Will look into that page too.
From the 8bit site, I tested the voltage from the various ports with a multimeter and all seemed within range. So I think the PS is ok. So likely a dead chip somewhere on the board. I gotta get it open and 'feel' the chips, I guess. Then try my lame soldering skills...if I can find a replacement...if that' even the problem ;-p
Thanks!
