.: cracking :.

Hey all :-)

I have a few questions that have bugged me about cracking c64 games. I never was a cracker on the scene so please excuse my ignorance...

The questions are:

1) Ikari cracked many games from tape that were Cyberload protected. How was this done with no cartridge ?

2) ESI cracked many games from disk that were EA or EPYX protected. How was this done with no cartridge ?

3) Legend cracked many games from cartridge mainly produced by Ocean. How were these titles cracked ?

Thanks guys....I don't know much about cracking....any help about these techniques would shed some light ;-)

Who said it was done without a cartdridge? I doubt that.
I think cracking was discussed in another thread here, see the forums.

you dont need a cartridge to disect loaders

as for the cartridge games, you can either modify
your kernal to prevent autoboot from cart or you
can user a cartport expander and switch between
slots to access the cartridge from basic/monitor/whatever. dont know if the crackers looked at the hardware to figure out how the bankswitching worked or if they just looked at the code.
i guess for ocean games you dont have to do more than dump out the banks to disk( switch bank with lda #bank sta $de00 ) and replace the writes to de00 in the gamecode with calls to a loaderroutine which loads the apropriate file from disk

For those interested in copy protections, this site offers different info on a number of them. As previously stated in a forum here on csdb, it also includes a number of cracked examples.

I was unable to find much on Cyberload (by John Twiddy) so if anybody knows where I can find info on this, let me know.

well if you dont know how to crack I just want to give you the advice not to start with the harder stuff like cyberload, guess it would be a bit too tricky to fiddle the stuff together if you dont have a decent clue on what is going on protectionwise. you should start with somethinbg easier. well it is just an advice though ;D good luck

Thanks Slator ;-)

I know the "basics" of cracking, but never fully got into it, I don't know if I ever will.

Some of these copy protections such as Cyberload, VMAX3 and others I find fascinating, especially the period that they came out, circa 1987.

Hence the reason for my original questions, manual cracking of such protections seemed like a real skill, an art that was lost through the use of cartridges.
