Event id #3070 : Techno Compo 2021
Hey musicians!
You are about to enter the TECHNO COMPO 2021!
The theme is old-school underground techno. Sometimes repetitive, but always evolving. The kind that you would ordinarily do with a simplistic drum machine and no more than a handful of synthesizers. Obviously the SID and C64 are too powerful in comparison, but let's try to constrain ourselves for once and concentrate on pulsating percussive arrangements with melodic elements perfected into their bare essence!
Deadline: 31 July 2021
Minimum length: 2 bars. Maximum length: 22 minutes.
Single executable, single SID chip, no other limitations!
As seems to be the norm: Max 2 entries per contestant.
You are expected to provide an executable to keep things cleanly as "C64 music". BUT let's also do something different than usual:
You are encouraged to also provide your perfect recording as a sound file, meaning that you can tweak your filters and anything in your track live!
On top of that, even some editing and effects are *allowed*. In fact, anything goes as long as it feels like it's essential to your track, but you will obviously get a better csdb score and comments (leaving a permanent mark on your legacy) if you keep your music C64 compatible and your executable enjoyable too.
CSDB prrrobably doesn't want to host the sound files (I guess -- we're talking about bigger files than usual C64 productions), so please link
somewhere outside. (dropbox, google drive, soundcloud, youtube...)
If you just want to make a regular prg/sid as always, and don't provide a recording, then one will be made for you. I will do my best to follow any instructions if you provide them, and of course try to find the best SID individual for your track.
Every entry is already declared AWESOME in advance, but there can be only one WINNER that will be decided by extremely appropriate celebrity judges:
MONO JUNK (DUM RECORDS) and MESAK (MR VELCRO FASTENER)!
These guys are legitimate legends with solid non-compromising discographies stretching all the way from the 90s into the future!
*Naturally* I will also try to make a mix of the entries with DS/DJ-2000, if they are compatible and sound good directly from the machine... Non-compatible entries could be played in executable form or in digital sound form using your recording. Or something. We'll see what you come up with! |

T-T-T-T-T-EKKKKKKKKKKKK-NO?!
great idea <3
definetely nothing I personally even think of trying but looking forward to the outcome, used to be at Love Parades when it still was cool and in Berlin (not f***ing Ruhrpott) and people didn't get trampled to death but just died from wrong pills in late 1990s |

really looking forward to the entries and maybe I'll create a new sid set again as well, it's only been 13 years /o\ |

Untz untz... Looking forward to this one... I was also an attendee of the Love Parade in Berlin and used to help run a network of IRC chat terminals in a number of Clubs called Clubnetz. Always a great excuse to get into a club to "check on the terminal" ;-) Somehow I also ended up at the afterparty of the first MTV European Music Awards in Berlin and a number of other great techno parties/events, such as Chromapark. Those were the days.
Oh and the event where The Orb played to a Charlin Chaplin movie in die Waldbuehne and we did an MBone broadcast into the internet for that. Worked better than the real audio broadcast another company (Pixelpark) did at the same time, but fewer listerns.
Telekom sponsored the connectivity, but their first question was where they could place their banner, to which I replied "Where's our internet".
Sorry, getting sidetracked, but really it's all The Ryk's fault as he mentioned The Love Parade. ;-) |

I am beyond excited seeing all these entries dropping from the usual suspects, some scene legends, AND then also so much killer awesomeness coming from (relatively) new names! What is there still coming on the last weekend?? |

There are still a few usual suspects missing, I'm still keeping my hopes up for entries from Wacek, Linus, Stinsen, Surgeon, Randy, Isildur, Encore, Psych858o, Jason Page and Mibri :)
(just to call out a few;) |

I won't be entering this one, but I'm very happy to be a spectator as this is turning out to be an absolutely killer event! My sincere compliments and thanks to deetsay for kicking it off - a well-defined compo that is satisfying a real appetite shared among musicians. |

Great competition. Perhaps the first one for a while, which makes any sense at all :)
I cannot differentiate between blues genres or metal genres, or modern pop altogether, but I guess they're as real and absolute as alledged dance music genres - one having busier drummer than the other or something like that. |

Hehe, I don't know if anyone noticed, but it didn't go at all like I planned. As far as I can tell, nobody did any live C64 tweaking in recordings (so I didn't either). At least there were some mastering and effects! I don't know if the concept of taking the running song and tweaking the filters and ringmods "live" is too strange, dontcha guys know that that's the fastest way to make some vivid C64 techno?
Anyway whatever! With these entries, I'm not complaining! The participants just took the compo and made it theirs, and it was GOOD!
So next time (same'ish bat-time next bat-year?) none of this live tweaking or recording business, just a regular C64 compo. |

Well, not everybody hes setup and knowledge for this ;) And it takes time to prepare live controls so take that into account ;) Bare SID is just fastest to make and 'tick off' the compo :D Regardless, event definitely spawned a number of really awesome entries - with or without live tweaking ;) |

Hey guys, and sorry for the delay with the results!
Thanks to everyone who participated and everyone who voted and enjoyed the entries! We knew it was going to be awesome and the compo still exceeded all expectations!
It's been a busy month so you'll have to wait a little longer for the Official Mix, but let's finally unveil the winner. After long and careful consideration the honourable jury (that's MONO JUNK and MESAK if you forgot) has reached an indisputable vertict and it is:
NEUPOLAR by LAURIKKA!
Congratulations!
Well done! Who are you? Where did you come from, where did you go? Please keep up the amazing work and release more techno! (And the same for everyone else in the compo)
But because we can, we're also giving the first runner-up prize to Mesak's favourite: BELL TRAM IN STROBE TUNNEL by FLEX!
Now, the rest, umm... I basically slapped the standings based on the votes (on 25.8.), but I did some recalculations on the top ones because CSDB's weighted average isn't too exact, and quickly realized it isn't very scientific either ;-), but then there were also the few that weren't even counted because of not enough votes, and I probably made some errors too, but such is scene life, here we go:
1. Neupolar by Laurikka
2. Bell Tram in Strobe Tunnel by Flex
3. Computer System by Robo/Tom (9.84)
4. Zero Fucks Capacitor by LMan (9.800)
5. Rhodium by Isildur (9.777778)
6. Killer 551 by Juzdie (9.7619)
7. Tektoff by Deetsay (9.666667)
8. Hundred Fucks Resistor by chuinho (9.5)
9. Mantissa by Proton (9.5)
10. Tekton by Deetsay (9.4)
11. Chromosphere by DAM (9.4)
12. Quantized Galaxy by Vincenzo (9.4)
13. Transmission Complete by Proton (9.3)
14. Ezer Róka Kapacitással by dalezy (9.3)
15. Schranzen Tanzen by Jammer (9.2)
16. Minimalprinzip by Warp 8 (9.2)
17. Kantama by Laurikka (9.1)
18. Magic Techno by Magnar Harestad (9.1)
19. Force4 by Dr. TerrorZ (8.83333)
20. Let There Be Noise by 6R6 (8.7)
21. Members Only by Jammer (8.5714)
22. Lake Erie by Soya (8.500)
23. Techshit by GI-Joe (8.3)
24. Baremetal Jacket by Warp 8 (7.4)
25. T3chno64 by Technotron (7.3)
26. The Tech Within by Manganoid (6.7)
27. Imperial Gubb March by Stabile Altbauten (6.5) |

Cool compo! I wish it was techno compo every week. (Then I might eventually contribute myself.) Thanks for organizing it! |

True that. I will try. I guess it is a little like trying to believe in God, even if you actually don't. Hard to actually believe it. |

I thought I was very clear that the jury would select one winner (and instead you got two) ;-). But honestly I hadn't given it much thought beyond that! So let's do better next time, official voting period and all, OR make the jury do all the work..
There are soooo many that deserved a better place, and Members Only is probably the most shining example! |

Thank you for the jury for the honor, very much appreciated! Thank you Deetsay for organizing the compo and also for being one of the pioneers making techno with SID. I vividly remember hearing Music in Rikos001 back in the day.
I guess it would be nice if the audience was bigger than the amount of participants but maybe it reflects that making the stuff is more fun than consuming it. |

Ahem! I didn't participate, but listened through most of the tunes. Was a bit lazy with commenting though... holiday mode. I certainly hope this compo makes a comeback in a year or so - not everyone likes techno, but some of us are mad about it. Congrats to winners, there are more than 3 of you in this compo. :) |

Yeah some very nice stuff in this compo. And some people are still missing in the list, so another compo is mandatory :) |
