Event id #1491 : C64.sk Cover Compo #2

<Post edited by CreaMD on 3/1-2013 11:24>

The most delayed compo sequel ever - CoverCompo#2 is finally here!

When: 1.1.2013 - 22.1.2013 (3 weeks)

Rules:

0. As with previous C64.sk compos. Compo entires will be published on-fly (in order as they come)
1. send your compo entries as SID files **WITH ALL CREDITS** to creamd@c64.sk . This version wont' be released until the compo is over.
2. Compo is *ANONYMOUS*. During the submission phase, only the uncredited MP3 version of the tune will be released. The name of the tune will be published.
3. Don't upload your entries anywhere until the compo voting phase is over (voting will be organised standard way at c64.sk). The voting phase will be closed 2 weeks after the compo deadline (which is at January 22. 2013)
4. Your tune must be a *COVER* version (or remix) of already existing music. Please, when sending e-mail provide also additional info about the tune. Credits, your comments (why you loved the original, or whatever comes into your mind). Thanx!
5. One entry per musician.

Hint: Make cover of your favourite "maintream" music. Chipmusic or mod covers are accepted too, and can be interesting if made well, but this compo is aiming on things you can hear in radio, or buy in music stores.

Don't forget: send your stuff to creamd@c64.sk with all credits included.

Have fun!

That address is hosting the tunes, so nope. You don't know the author. As for the rules are concerned. It would be nice if the authors themselves respected it by not jumping around discussion immediatelly after they send something etc.

Hello..
On that download page, I think it would be a good idea to tell who made the original tune, year of original release, album name, publisher, and maybe even a link to a youtube clip.

Are you recording to mp3 from real sid chip or via emulator ?
(Real sid chip is preferred)

I am sure Xiny6581 does the recording from real hw.
And yes, more info on the originals would be nice so that ppl do not have to google that.

More info is always nice. But it has usually to be done from incomplete data. So somebody has to do it. Maybe it would be nice to crowdsource it. Put the entries on CSDB (without D/L links if admins wouldn't mind) and let people to add trivia.

MP3 are recorded on real SID by Xiny6591.

Hello one and everyone :)
Thanks for all the awesome songs which has been submitted so far!
Okay let's clear out a few things.
I host the site and should be blame for the design ;)
The recordings are of course done on real C-64 equipped with 8580R5 and 6581R4AR chips.

The files are recorded straight from the C-64 to wave formats and then encoded to 192khz CBR mp3.
The files have and NEVER will be improved with any kind of dynamic effects, such as Noise gate, Compressor, Maximizer or even Normalizer. Nope what you hear is the DRY source directly from the C-64 Audio out. The only thing I've done is to ground the audio(ground) signal to prevent any 50hz hums from that ugly RF-Modulator. Oh, by the way on the 6581R4AR machine I have even removed the nasty RF-BOX.

As far as it comes to filenames and origins, that CAN be implemented, but I try to keep it short. To avoid conflicts with and copyrights (like to link a youtubeclip on my site). So as far as the wave is now That stuff can be discussed here okay.
I mean IF things are green and smelling good, perhaps a more informative page can be added, but we'll see about that. After all I don't have unlimited of time to jazz around like that(didn't find a correct trainer to give real life unlimited of hours :-)).

Anyhow let's get this pipe glowing!
Cheerz,
Xiny6581 aka (Cris)

Wow, your modded C64's are really quiet. Dead quiet! Quieter than my HardSid! ;)

Btw, is there any reason to why some mp3s have 2 channels? And are you able to provide a mono lossless (e.g. the wave file itself) too?

Yeah, FLAC would be nice.

I'll get a bit nerdish here ;)
Just "192kbps" isn't enough info by the way, VBR is already a standard, and it's even important what preset in the encoder you use (not to mention which encoder, which is even more important, many encoders cut off above 18,5kHz as standard, for example). I'd suggest LAME with --alt-preset extreme which results around ~256kbps. That should be enough.

I prefer 1 entry per composer as well. This way a composer is forced to select the best of his possible entries for the competition. And deal with the emotional consequences. ;)

All in all, you can compete in both compos anyway.

Wackee, talk to me like that :)
I'm a headphone-audiophile geek.
So 192 kbps is lame :) All the most important frequencies are just cut.

--Mr Ammo Btw, is there any reason to why some mp3s have 2 channels? And are you able to provide a mono lossless (e.g. the wave file itself) too?

That is basically my fault to have some of the mp3s are dual channels, because of the software I use for recording. It's been acting weird and seems to have an own of its own to either not work or work mono/stereo :) But yeah that will be fixed soon when upgrading to a new version.

As far as it comes to lossless etc. I am bouncing the idea back and forth. The main reason to keep the files in 192khz is to keep the filesize down, due I don't have unlimited space on my webhotel. Then I of course want to torture the headphone-audiophile geeks ;)
But we'll see about this in the future. I have kind of noticed some SIDs don't erect as good as they should... so the future will tell ;)

--Wackee
Yes, you're right there hence why I consider to dump the mp3 encoding and upgrade to a more modern format such as FLAC.

Oh by the way is FLAC a free format or do I need a special "common creative" license for it? (I know it's opensource and all that shit and yeah freeware or whatever it's called;) don't lecture me with that basic crap! :-))

PS.I've done some experimental recordings with FLAC, as well and yeah sometimes FLAC can get smaller than an mp3.

Wouldn't normally be a problem waiting for a CreamD compo, but this one hurts because it's still anonymous. Can we get the voting going? Roman!!??!? :)

this delay is ridiculous. If Roman still won't act or comment, Xiny should add the entries (anonymosly first) to csdb to get the voting going...

Okay. How about I launching voting on monday. Deal?
Btw. it wasn't always like this, but since I've got all married with children and dead walking around the scene like third class zombie .. well.. crap.. I don't even feel like finding emotionally strong excuses.

Monday? With a big bang, of course.

...anyway, where was I... aha, looking for last years Forever party results txt.

"Olsen Banden" that must have been made by some Norwegian fellow. And that Rambo song sounds very familiar, I think I know who.

You are so rigorous. I sent a registration form to the Spankers Heaven 2 weeks ago, but I didn't get any answer yet. :)

Ok it seems all authors (except of five) are revealed now. Voting is now pointless. I apologise for the delay of Rambo Revisited and voting of Cover Compo #2. No more online c64 msx or c64 gfx compo organising from me. Thanx for all the support over the years it was a great trip and a lot of cool stuff has been done that I listen to from time to time.

A shame you decided to stop organising compos. We all liked those and your participation in them. Maybe you can reconsider over a period of time?

i have been a driver in creating hvsc for 28 years, and i am still a driver, and i am still in hvsc, but as "consultant", im not gonna use more years to rip :)

anyhow, i often thought of hvsc having regular compos, so why wait, i can do that. we can have themes and wild, and styles, and any kinda compo we think will be fun.

compos make contributors try their best with something new, they are not themself, and do extraordinary things.

its the taking part in something that changes the whole situation. yeah!! im gonna do this.

i find out of something, and i let you all know.
