Icing 1995 was held in an icehall/hockeyrink somewhere in Gothenburg. Obviously, the ice was gone, but it was still kinda chilly inside.
Anyway, the Icing concept was concieved by Liket/Noice. At this time, Liket had lost most of his interest in the c64 and was instead heavily involved with PC stuff (including early PC based radio broadcasts if I remember correctly).
However, ofcourse he still wanted as many people as possible to attend the first party he arranged, so it was advertised as a multi-platform party and invitations was spread on the c64, amiga and PC scene. At the time I was also involved in the PC scene (in Objectile, somewhere between 1994-1996, together with among others Skyhawk/Laxity and RaveGuru/Booze Design, before OCT fell apart and some people moved on to Rebels PC. But that's a whole different story...), so I thought it sounded like a fun party to attend.
It turned out that Liket needed co-organisers, and so Joyride/Noice was brought in, and he in his turn brought me in. As far as I know, Liket did more or less all of the planning. I was just helping out with practical stuff at the partyplace.
So, me and Joyride headed up to Gothenburg together with Christ/Duplo (amiga) and Taste/INC (PC) and possibly someone else (memory is more than a little fuzzy after all this time). This was one day before the party started, and I remember Liket meeting us in the hall, giving us green "fruit of the loom" t-shirts to designate us as organisers. I still have my t-shirt somewhere, with my handle written on it with a magic marker. I think we were atleast 15 organisers all in all (Liket, Joyride and me the ones with c64 affiliation, others were amiga and PC sceners), doing everything from putting up tables and chairs to fixing the video and soundsystem. I remember SCALA for the amiga being used a lot for infomercials during the party.
I can't really recall how many visitors that did arrive at the party, but I think it must have been somewhere between 300-500 people. Atleast it felt quite big for a swedish sceneparty at that time. I remember being responsible for ordering pizzas and shouting out in the loudspeakers when the deliveries came in, and there were like 80 pizzas ordered each time.
I think there was a laserdisc system (or was it just VHS?)at the party too, playing movies like "The Mask", "Batman" and others on the bigscreen.
Most people present were amiga or PC sceners. It felt like the c64 people wasn't really that attracted to the Icing concept. Also, the swedish c64 scene was at that time beginning to enter a downhil spiral where a lot of hardcore people started to loose interest and groups began to fall apart or simply went inactive. It was a sign of times to come (96 and 97 probably being the most depressive years for the swedish c64 scene ever, before things started to slowly pick up pace again in 98).
So, in the end only a small bunch of c64 sceners showed up at the party. Among them were ofcourse some people from Noice, but also some Bonzai members, members from Fairlight, someone from Active, Unifier/Flash Inc. (well, I think he'd left Flash by then, but anyway), most of the guys from Meta (I remember Terric among them) and a few others. I met Macx for the first time at this party, I think he called himself Shark back then and was a member of a group named Ambush. It was his first party and he was about as tall as the tables, hehe.
It was rumoured that Bonzai was about to release a c64 demo at the party, but they never did. In the end, there was no c64 releases at all, and it kinda felt a bit like the deathbed vigil party of the remaining swedish c64 scene for us who were present (that wasn't completly true though, ofcourse there were quite some active swedish people left that just didn't bother to show up at this party).
Despite this, I remember the party in a good vibe. There was a lot of nice shitchat among the c64 people that did attend, I guess we all stuck together against the large forces of amiga and PC sceners. :) I got to learn how SCALA worked and exchanged a lot of floppies with some of the other c64 sceners.
The worst thing was that I didn't bring any sleeping gear at all. The first night I found some kind of mats that I piled up and slept on. However, when I woke up I noticed that the surface had scratched and that they were made of fibreglass (isolation material). It itched like crazy (yeah, I know, that was universally stupid). So, the remaining nights I slept on one of the wooden benches the hockeyplayers sit on during matches. Just like that... Amazing what you could endure when younger, hehe.. :)
The party ended on Sunday, but we stayed until Monday to help clean the place up. However, as I remember it, Joyride was totally beat so we didn't do much cleaning before he decided we had to head back home again (afterall, he was the one driving the car). Not sure Liket appreciated us skipping most of the after party duties, but I'm sure he has forgiven us by now. :)
Funny thing is, I remember that the first thing I did when I got home was to hook up the c64 and start checking all the disks I had copied. After 5 days at the partyplace and 4 pretty sleepless nights, I didn't feel worn out. Geeze... :)
I'm sure Liket could tell you more details. It was 16 years ago by now, so I hope my mind hasn't played tricks on me. This is how I remember it though. |
