Release id #65099 : Wooden Ships and Iron Men [ntsc/pal]
Wondering about this release as it should be cracked by ESI and imported by TPI
Anyone can see any reference that ESI cracked it?

Judging by the entries here and the one available on Gamebase 64 (which are all very much similar), my best guess is that this game was not processed by any NTSC group... It was probably just imported from an unprotected original.
The Shark (INC?) was thanked in one of the entries... if/when he comes back around, maybe he can shed some more light on it.

Yes, the reference to "The Shark" in the Fusion intro was thanking me for sending Mark LeMay this game over the modem. He was on the keyboard for the scroll text and the note file.
Sadly, I have little recollection of this specific game. By 1988, the NTSC scene was so mature that seeing a game w/o an intro was extremely rare. NTSC cracking groups were so desperate to get their name on something, even Sharedata stuff, due to ESI releasing most of the good games. If/when a game around this time was released w/o an intro, it usually (a) sucked and (b) was generally assumed that ESI released it minus an intro or acknowledgement as to not tarnish their name.
I no longer have the disk with this game -- I'm sure I promptly deleted the game in 1988 to make room for better stuff. I did notice that WGO and ESI released two other Avalon Hill games from 1987, according to CSDb. |
