Something interesting about Wayne Schmidt pictures
I was having a closer look at the MCOL pics by Wayne Schmidt that are uploaded here. In many of his pictures where black seems to be the bg colour it could also be another something else.
This is pretty interesting and makes me appreciate those pictures even more in a technical way, seeing as they are done in a more limited ruleset than standard C64 MCOL bitmap (pretty much like plus/4 compatibles, and these pictures would work virtually perfect on the plus/4 range)
yellow: Fyrebyrd
light red: Serene
light green: Money
light grey: Choo-Choo / Witch (Phantom of the Opera)
brown: Howdy Doody
In Gray Library it can be light or dark grey, which is not super surprising as it is almost a 4 colour image colour image.

I think D021 allready is a different colour than black in many cases. Colourram (D800) seems black for the whole picture. They could've been drawn with Paint Magic, which doesn't allow for colourram change per char and requires manual colouring of the screencolours per char. So the pictures may have been drawn in 3 colours first, with colours added later with the Paint Magic colouring tool. The bitmap bitpatterns are well ordered, which is different when doing it in Koala. Koala Paint swaps bitpatterns on the fly.
That's how I did my first graphics (in Paint Magic), well suited for conversion to 3 colour char logos for demos, because of the ordered bitpatterns. Gimme them rasters, woop woop.
The whole process is interesting indeed, seeing the result. He sure knew what he was doing and he was doing it with great care. Those anti-alias and pattern techniques are very tight! |

Hein: Your theory is quite possible Common D800 would make sense. There are quite a few things one can learn from looking at Wayne Schmidt pictures, mainly in the way he constructed them as well as colour usage, and patterns. His anti-alias is alright but often also ineffective, when he does it, like in the Money picture.
The long diagonals should have "longer" anti-alias, not just a single pixel, which really does nothing in terms of smoothing the line.
The main thing that I have taken from his work personally is to prioritise sharp detail over aa in my more recent pictures (all of which are as of jet unreleased, apart from Them Apples) |

True, not all AA is optimal, but some is very good for the time (the eyes of Howdy Doody for instance). I remember checking some of ORC's anti-alias techniques for the few pictures he did, which was a very sharp way of anti-aliassing compared to my own stuff. I did anti-alias just out of habit, didn't put much thought in it. He used only dark-gray or dark-blue next to a white or light-gray line. Which I think was his way of taming the blockiness of MC pixels with respect. :) |

Yeah, totally. I think that on the C64 it is bad to do habitual AA, in MCOL anyway. You have to see what works well in terms of colours, or as I stated, what is more important in this char, aa or sharp detail which would then not allow for an AA colour, or AA space.
Also, it's been a while since you made some pictures, right?

It's been a while indeed. I did some fonts though, previous Crack Intro Competition. :) |
