GFX-Editors and FLI Modes

I would like to paint on the C64, but I have no clue which editor to use.

What is the best...

- Hires Editor (with colour)?
- Multicolour Editor?
- FLI Editor?
- Interlace Editor?

Could somebody also explain me all those FLI modes, like UFLI, AFLI etc. ? (Hope that question didn't appear in other posts, if yes, please excuse me)

Will be grateful for your help.

Here's some pretty good info about the modes, although not all of them are covered: http://www.studiostyle.sk/dmagic/gallery/gfxmodes.htm

There's basically two kinds of FLI - multicolor and hires (aka AFLI.)

Then you can combine it with a layer of sprites, e.g. UFLI which is an AFLI pic with a layer of x-expanded sprites behind it. The FLI in this mode is only updated on each 2nd line, because of the sprites, which steal some cycles from the displayer.

There are other modes with 8 sprites and FLI each line, e.g. SHIFLI, but here the gray bug to the left is bigger than the usual 3 chars.

I'm quite surprised that there are such a fluent production of pictures with the kind of tools there are available. The IFLI tools simply and plainly sucks. So does most of the multicolor programs out there - mainly because there isn't a good and flexible way to handle the colors in most programs, eg. having a separate coloreditor where you could sort, swap and change the colors for each char. That noone have done it so far proves that there are coders doing the tools, to start with.

The FLI-editors out there are mainly discusting aswell. Most of them is taking for granted that you want to use black as a backgroundcolor, their colorhandling sucks and the lot I described above. The worst of it is that no editor (save for the crappy one from Dolphins) which has a decent half-size zoommode.

And hireseditors? We'll, we have that one from Crest, and we had that improved one which surfaced some year ago, and we have Royal, which is outright brilliant but so far unreleased. For singlecolorhires, i'd go for Bitmapeditor 1.9 by The Fly of System. ;-)

2Flower, about only coders doing gfx editors: Compyx/Focus, one of the best logo-graphicians ever, made a few editors (unreleased to the public, but right now he's working on a new one), and ofcourse Mirage's Timanthes tool (on windows) is also done by a top graphician, so hopefully that one will give you the functionality you desire.

Also please note that IFLI takes a huge amount of memory which somehow limits the functionality of an editor aswell.

@2F: We all know that most gfx artists out there (here :) are really sucky coders. Further, most coders don't have a clue about how to paint. Result -> the situation of today, and the world is in order :).

Better to have a UFLI/FLI etc editor under Windows. (sure, the gfx would not look right, but with pal emulation, maybe closer to the real thing) No memory restrictions, etc etc

HCL: Both Dane and you have gone through the pain of painting in really sad graphicstools - and know the errors by heart, right? And both of you know how to code really well, especially graphicwise? And atleast one of you have made gfx-tools in the past (hmm, haven't you done some aswell?) so, isn't it due time for you to fulfill the wishes of a demanding public? Or atleast mine? :-)

I'd even throw in the old Mute 101 trick to mention you in a positive way in each and every chapter of the next NSR if you'd do it. :-)
