newcomer, i've just bought a c64 with 300 programs
I've been looking for a c64 to make music for quite some time and I finally found one for £15, a real bargin you'll are agree. The music programs that I got with it are as follows; ubiks music, the music system, drum studio and soundtracker 64. Some I can't get to down load, I'm thinking maybe the tape heads need demagnetizing. Has anyone ideas why this could be? |

You can use cartridges to freeze software and save it to disk, but this is a little crude and wouldn't work with multiloads. Probably the easiest thing to do would be to just look online for the disk versions of your cassette software. There will be very little not easily available online and what you can't find online is probably not worth having anyway :) |

About transferring c64 disks from a PC hard disk to the c64 disk drive, try the software Star Commander from the internet. I don't know if there's a mac version..... |

Or, as I wrote, get a MMC64 and use it as a converter from pc-c64 (disk). Or grab a RR-net and use it.
Those methods are the only ones that has worked for me. |

There is alot of tools you can use that allready can do it (cannot remember the names, sorry) but if you use ABC Turbo (FLASH version) for your tapes you load insert the tape into it with the basic load command, and write the basic command save "nameoffile",9,1 as I remember but that is long time I did it.
If you use other turbotapes the syntax for save would be save "nameoffile",8,1 and ofcoz you need a formatted floppy in both cases in the floppydrive. |

Easiest is to use A.T.T.A.C V1.0 when transfering tapes. |

Hi Donkey,
people always dislike tape (dunno why :).
Just in case you want to try something inbetween:
you can use the soundmonitor - people call it oldschool but I like its sounds ;)
Its made for disk as well but you can patch it:
load it, then:
poke 8676,1
poke 11113,1
poke 11154,1
poke 11191,1
poke 11733,1
and save it again
when running it from tape later use:
sys 64738
sys 2167
to start.
After each load/save you have to reset (runstop/restore) and restart by sys 4096.
May appear a bit complicated but hey - things dont always have to be easy :)
In general you should maybe indeed go with a cheap floppy.
But I dislike people speaking of 'old crap' when dealing with c64...

well... just get a disk drive ok? you can get a 1541 which is absolutely ok, for a few bucks everywhere...
then download your software from the internet; you might want to start with sadotracker, jch, cybertracker or something, i am not that much in music programming...
to transfer the software to disk there are several possibilities; in most cases you'll need a special cable to connetct the disk drive with the pc's lpt port. the most common software is "star commander" (try google). this one needs the X1541-cable and must be run in MS-DOS.
Another poossibility is "cbm4linux" or "cbm4win" (try google)
they need a XA1541-cable but can be run under multitasking os (linux or win).
I don't know if there is any transfer-software for MAC - you'll have to find out by yourself.
Or change to IBM-PC... ;)
Another possibility would be to use an c64 emulator (there are some for MAC, but i can't remember the name, i think "power64" or something), then create your music on yoour MAC with the emulated softwares. But that's not the REAL thing though it would give you some idea on how to get started quickly.
Then later on when you're more familiar with the C64 you could change to the REAL machine.
