rob hubbard - reason 4

FINALLY got reason 4 today..

opened up the demo songs to see what the score was.

rob re-did commando tune for reason 4.. and yet I STILL prefer the original c64 version..

F*cking sh*t...the whole track is compressed to hell :-(
Also, can somebody tell Rob to turn off that reverb? :-(

Musically it's okay-ish but production wise it's shit.

the patches for the synths he made from scratch, on their own they sound ok, just dry without fx.. just the levels are to high

there is no compression on the track.. each sound plays really loud.

the volumes in the notation /mixer are basically too high and not properly eq'd.. so the mix is crowded anyway.

there is a slight eq on cut on the final mix out, but then theres a maximizer (limiter) to stop it from clipping, which it does if you bypass that rack unit.

to be honest i don't think he had a lot of time to work with it.. and errm well it shows.

I think the prop's should have given him help mixing wise, or maybe just assumed "hey its that guy who did amazing sid tunes.. no point to check the work, I'm sure its fine"

You should check your ears, dude. The track is compressed to shreds.
You hear the freqs pushed down. Go to 0:15 when the lead melody kicks in; some notes completely disappear.
Also some background stuff is pushed away.

Edit: ofcourse, you can see the rack in Reason :)
That limiter explains it too, yeap.
It gets even more horrible everytime I listen to this track though...

scout I have the notatation infront of me, all the rack he used.. lol

there is NO reason compressor units running from the sends etc.. and the compressor in "mastering suite" is by passed.

there probably IS compression within the thor synths he used.. BUT he could have cut a lot of the unwanted frequencies running it into an eq, for each sound, then the mixer..

the individual sounds are clipping on their own without him using a limiter.

what u want a screenshot of the arrangement & rack ? hehe

It doesn't sound like a compression thing to me, but rather as constructive interference between the lead and one of the other sounds (arpeggio-ish thing - but not the stereo ping pong one.. :)) that create a high for a moment (at 0:15).. Another reason that I don't think it's a compression thing, is because of the ping pong arpeggio that is VERY loud in the mix - even louder than the lead (EDIT), which doesn't affect the volume of the other channels.

laxity its easy for me or any reason 4 user to see, as we have the advantage of seeing arrangement and not just going by the sound. Can see what was used onscreen,so 30 seconds of scrolling and how he wired up/bypassed certain things, the sounds in the rack etc.

another reason user did ask on their forum for them to make a sid module within it , i said its bitter / sweet. as yes its a nice sound but you'll get idiots abusing it and ripping off ".sid" ' s if it had the ability to load them.

sometimes the minority spoil it for the majority, in this case some lardy doughnut eating producer who can't produce his own sh..
