Weighted averages wrong?
So, I came across this entry:
Small Chunk
It's (currently) got 6.9 as average.
It's got 6 votes
5 people voted 8
1 people voted 6
8+8+8+8+8+6 = 46
So the average 46 / 6 = 7.6.
Or am I missing something? |

:) Ok... I would sort of agree with you; who cares... If it wasn't for the fact that in this case, there are 4 known voters and the 6 vote is anonymous, and still the 6 vote is weighted MORE than the 8-votes...

whats so strange about it? the only thing it shows (yet again) is that 6 votes are way too few to calculate anything meaningful. |

Ah... From 7.6 to 6.9 compared to the mean average I would say is a substantial difference, but it might just be me... |

I agree, it's very strange.
Speculating about possible reasons:
* The "6" vote is 6 times as worth as either of the "8" votes
* There's another invisible "2" vote
* There's a "0" vote being worth 0.7 times a regular vote (speculating again: maybe someone added this to prevent prods having just a few votes from entering the toplist) |

Some releases get weighted averages that are below the actual average, other releases get weighted averages that are higher.
I guess there's really only Perff who knows exactly how it's calculated. I believe there's a thread where he explains the reasons for the weighted averages somewhere if I recall correctly...? |
