categories for other platform tool

wouldn't it be great if the other platform tools where sorted by a certain category ( sprite/bitmap/sid/converting)?

YES! I agree... :-)

categories like:
- Music Creator
- Music Converter
- Gfx Creator
- Gfx Converter
- Compilers
- Crunchers
- Packer/Linker

And... Let's also include Platform (not as a category, but as a separate flag)
Makes it more easy to skip all linux tools :-)

It should also be possible to couple multiple platforms to one release.
I know there are some tools avail for linux and windows. They're now both the same release with a different download link for each platform.

Actually...

C64 should also be a platform. Just like C128, Vic20, Linux, Windows, Dos, Apple...

Category is now combined with platform. These should be seperated.

Also, if you add the tool categories:
- Music Creator
- Music Converter
- Gfx Creator
- Gfx Converter
- Compilers
- Crunchers
- Packer/Linker

Then they're available for all platforms... (also for C64!)
So you're able to search for all C64 Crunchers, or all Linux Gfx Converters, etc..

Oh Perff,
I hope you're a SQL wizz and you can convert the data in the DB with a script. Otherwise it prolly will be a shitload of work. :-)

Good idea.
I've thought about the category "crack" as well. Some stuff are "packed" or "crunched" by, should those go as "crack" or is "packed"/"crunched" worth the space as seperate credits?
Just wondering...

Bwuh...

Good idea, but we're not discussing credits here. :-)
"crack" is already a category.

Though I think "demo preview" ands "game preview" could be helpfull categories too!

Intro Collection would also be useful.
Maybe it would be better with a system where you can combine different cathegories, f.ex. Game + Collection, Graphics + Collection, Tool + Collection... Maybe even Demo + Onefiler... or Demo + 4k ? or something like this... Just a thought.

Yes, I agree...

You should have different categories which can be combined.

1. Type of Release (demo, game, intro, tool)
2. Platform (C64, C128, Windows, Linux)
3. Size (disk, file, 4K, etc)
4. Collection y/n

I see another BIG thing for the CSDb todo-list building up here. :)

As I understand, what is asked for it some kind of dividing og release categories - in this case for "other platform tool".
We already have one for graphics, where you can chose the graphic-type. However this is a little hack as the DB wasn't designed to have subtypes to begin with.

I see two options:
1. Expand the existing hack to include "other platform tool" to be able to subdivide this category.
2. Redesign the entire release-type to include subcategories for all types.

In both cases it's not something that is done just like that. I must admit that I would prefer option 2 as this is the "right" thing to do, and actually have been on the todo-list (kinda) for quite some time.

So... comments?

Option 2.

Also gives more flexibility for future!

Edit:
And, if you do option 1 now, you'll have a shitload of work to convert that back to option 2 when the time comes.

So, it's more functionality, cleaner db architecture, more future proof and more flexible to choose option 2.
