Maybe it is because of the entries held back due to commercial sales. They would be only available to registered users then.

Well some releases get mass-downloaded via google-hits.
Check the statistics :)
At least that would go away.
Instead there would be mass-registration attempts, hehe.
However, many external forums link directly to CSDB for releases. That way the 'global interest' in entries is tracked more or less by the dl-counter. I like that.
Closing CSDB dl's for 'visitors' would end that.

a http refferal "if" would help for hotlinking.
if the ref-host is not "*.c64.org" (and the other csdb domains) you can not download the file.
could be made in some minutes =)

edit: i am not saying that i want the files to be "protected" on here, i am just suggestion a solution if the admins want to take care of this "problem".

there is no such problem. this is for those who dont want a public download link, for whatever reason. no more no less :) (didi hinted one possible usecase =P)

I noticed that on a particular entry, when I untick this option, it is ticked again when I go back editing.
This way I will never be able to see what the actual status of the option is.
