In what format should I upload releases?
When I upload a release to CSDb, what is the prefered format? If it's just a singlefile crack/demo it seems more logical to just upload the PRG, but then I have to rip apart spread disks.
But if I upload the whole D64, it's possible that there's other stuff on the disk too, so when you autostart the D64 you will get something else than expected.
What's the best way? |

In .D64 or .T64.
This way you preserve the original filenames.
.prg's fuck that up.
Also split the different releases from one disk in seperate d64's (or t64's).
Edit: and yes, it can be a tedious job if you want to
do it properly :-/

Doesn't creating a new D64 have the same problem as PRGs, though - that it takes the release out of the spread disk?
Maybe I should just upload both the PRG and D64 :) |

If you use the right tools you can preserve everything.
64Copy V4.3 Beta 3 is highly recommended for this job. |

Also remember to WIPE files and not only delete them, if you split one d64 into more d64s, to allow better compression. Deleting only keeps the files on the disk, you know. |

C64copy is the best but you can use this one too D64 Editor V0.028 if you like it to manage .d64 or upload .prg files into a .d64 |

I usually take the crack of a spread disk, copy it into a blank .d64 file and then use a dir editor to transfer the directory design into the new .d64. |

helpfull post this!
i'm just transferring a few 100 disks myself at the moment.
I was wondering, can you use a deformatter (like micron's or other/better ones you can suggest) on transferred .d64 files?
I ask, because i did transfer 'blank' sides to .d64 just incase I might have left old files/games/whatever that seemed pointless to keep in those days but that might actually still be on the disk.
Also I am wondering maybe the obvious, but wouldn't it be wise to zip .d64 or .d81 files before upping them to csdb? I notice several people don't do that (including myself by accident once or twice).

StarCommander has a also function to check d64 images for errors and/or deleted files, and also can try to repair them (deformat)... You can also easy create new empty d64 and copy the stuff from other images over etc.
d64/t64 is ofcourse the prefered format! I think disk-layouts of spreaddisk is not that "really important thing" (at least for me, though it's nice to have - not a must), more to preserve the filenames - which you'll do with d64/t64 |

pls try to preserve as much as you can!
filenames, dirlayout, EVERYTHING!
there is always someone who wants to have this :-)
so:
if you have the time, spend it on copying files with a decent tool, so you keep the original filenames
if you have even more time, copy the dirlayout as well
if you cannot 'afford' it, think about uploading the spread-disk as well, so someone can do this work later... |

Another good thing about preserving the original images is that it allows somebody to dig deeper into the disk later on. There's been quite a few disks that had extra files on them not shown in the directory listing. |

Don't forget about Dir messages on Track 18, it's nothing special but sometimes funny messages, sometimes addresses or slogans, often used on Hotline, Cosmos spread disks e.g. |

yeah, like 'TALENTED RULERZ' which is a perfect indicator to better double check the files for errors... |

I doubt it. I downloaded a 5.5GB torrent of disk images that was linked from another thread.. and, afaik, that was only stuff <85... so yeah, think you're gonna need quite a byte more :_)

If you're talking about the torrent I posted, that one was definitely not only pre-85 stuff, but from all over the place. If you're talking about another torrent...give it to me! :) |

The 15GB megatorrent I created is still available, get the torrent file from one of these locations:

Indeed, that's probably the best way.
As for the format: I personally prefer uncompressed D64. Uncompressed, because most ppl have fast internet connection and plenty of HD space. If you download a lot of stuff, decompressing it all can get a bit annoying.
D64, because it's most easy to handle format, not only for emulators and transfering, but also for just showing - e.g. there are plenty of D64 viewers for Windows, but hardly any T64 viewer (if you know any standalone T64 viewers, be free to name them!). |

15GB on torrent?
oh my.. that will take forever..
i'll need to hook up a different system tomorrow to start on it since i simply don't have 15gb free on this laptop.
Do you have any objections if I upload it to usenet and post that if/when it completes for getting that spread more widely and faster? |

File Format;
Anything you can run straight off any c64/pc without having to unrar/zip. D64/t64/prg is apreciated!
Torrent; Good, all needed is some people to share bandwidth and harddiscspace. Thumbs up! |

Trazan, ok! I'll not zip d64 files from now on unless it's 2-sided or bigger releases. |

I disagree, I always zip .d64 files !
Follow this basic rule, Zyron and other use it too:
One file release in a .t64
multi-load in a .d64

Please please please no .t64 .. ever since I installed a new winvice I can't get that format associated with it (even though .prg & .d64 work fine). And as this is TDJ's csdb (go ask Graham) I think it should be obvious nobody uses .t64 anymore.
After all, you don't want me to start up winvice and actually have to drag & drop the file, do you? |

Yes, but it seems my system is on the fritz or something, because it used to work fine. No biggy, I need to reinstall XP soon anyway. |

I don't see the problem, I use VICE 1.22 and it's loading
the .t64 files without any problems with autostart...

I know, the problem is my pc, not Winvice. Still: no .t64s from now on, mmmkay? |

TDJ, assuming you are using a pc with dutch windows:
rightclick a .t64 file -> eigenschappen
in tabblad 'algemeen' you'll see 'openen met'
If it's not associated with any program you'll see 'onbekende toepassing'
T64 might be associated with another program or even with a previous version of vice your computer cant find because it's not there, or filename changed, or whatever.
Hit 'wijzigen' and re-asign it to your current version of winvice.
that might actually help ;)
*edit* if that doesn't work, assign .t64 to for instance notepad or kladblok it's called in dutch (sigh.. hehe), double click a .t64 -> should open in notepad. Then re-assign it again to your version of vice. I had the same unexplainable bug with another piece of software once and managed to 'reset' it like that.

Your first option I already tried ofcourse, but I'll check out the other one. Like I said: it's very strange because the first option did work for .d64 & .prg :Z
Edit: okay, it works now, you people have my permission to use the .t64 format as well. |

some adobe acrobat readers also like to register d64s to be opened with them. then complain about unknown file format.
