Well, I for one like to know what people are doing in real life, and how that connects to their scene activities.

Me, I'm a software architect, responsible for the 5th largest site in Holland. Also, my love for writing (long) scrolltexts resulted in me being a lyricist for a Dutch singer (shameless plug: http://www.lyrical.demon.nl/owngod/)

The scene made me what I am today, for sure.

I work as a clinical psychologist on a psychiatric hospital for children and adolescens. I once considered making a living from music but for some reason I have always wanted to keep the music primarily a hobby... Been studying math stuff for a year but it wasn't really that interesting... Doing music commercially now and then... I guess most sceners today work with computers... ;)

Studied geology and am now working in a geological engineering office, doing mostly environmental engineering, also a bit groundwater and civil/underground engineering. It's about 75% office work, writing expert reports and consultant recommendations, the rest is field work aquiring data, taking ground/water samples, surveying. My dream job ever since, and it has absolutely nothing to do with my history as C64 user. ;)

am I the only one not working with computers?
I'm a decorator.
I paint, I lay carpets and I hang wallpaper.

Hanging wallpaper is very much like making love to a beautiful woman!
You clean all the relevant services,
spread her out on the table,
colour with paste and stick her up!

You clean your brush,
light ur pipe,
stand back and admire your handywork!

in all honesty,
I love my job!

So what do I do for a living? Well, I work at a bioscience company, GE healthcare where I handle the distribution (mainly in europe). Yes, you could say I'm a swapper. ;-) Nice work, good pay and excellent working-pals.

I'm more concerned about my future jobs than the previous ones...

I've done some things throug computer journalism, both paper and TV, through game cartridges development, through web development, through bussines java application programming, through doing some 3d illustrations, through foreign trade, through Manga/Anime importing, through the game programming for PC, to whatever future brings...

You know what they say - if you done so many of them, you cant be really good at any :)

Oh! I used to work as a teacher for one year too :)

i´ve been working in a videostore for some years, selling hollywood-crap, pr0n and pc/playstation/x-box games. guess the xxx-stuff ist very scenerelated :)
Also did some pdf related coding for some insurance, most boring shit i ever did. I got that job because the owner is an old shoolmate of me who remembered that i used to code on the c64.
these days i´m doing prepress stuff at a scientific book-publisher. Pretty cool job, as i have much time to hang around here while printing the plates for offsetmachines.

I have not heard the song. I simply read the lyrics. I assumed the song was to be performed by the famale on the page, although i did notice the small print at the bottom of the screen implying J.Tel on vocals. Never knew J.Tel could sing.

Jailbird, you live in Serbia, no way. I drove though there last year while traveling. I felt like i was on the moon or some Mad Max place. I stuck to the toll roads which were empty most of the time, there were a few other cars on the road from time to time. Every now and then i'd see a petrol/gas station. I pull over and pop in and see what was on offer. Most of the shelves were empty. They sold cans of coke and one place had very hardcore porn dvd's on a stand directly as i walked into the shop, which seemed an odd place to located such material, an i always felt like i was their first customer in weeks. All in all it was quite an experience.

You most likely travelled on the southern part of the country, actually it's really like that there. I live on north, where the economy is more steady, there are a lot of farmlands, industries, and the life conditions are slowly getting better and better. However, the unenployment is still above 50% here on north, and a salary of 150 euros is considered to be a quite fine catch, now imagine what's down there...

.from the motor way (toll road) the landscape was just so flat with nothing there. It felt really good. Every so often a petrol station would appear and there could be a house or 2. I would think, what a place to live.

Click the title of the song on the top of the page - there's an mp3 under it ;)

Jeroen sings the first part (guy feeling sorry for himself), Brenda sings the main part (girl telling him to get over it). Yes Jeroen can sing, although he's a much better musician ;-)

This is just one of the first few 'real' song lyrics I wrote though (only rap lyrics before that), latter ones are much much better but unfortunately I can't give you the mp3s of those (or Brenda would kill me - she doesn't even like this page).

And hey, you can always check out trans*form again to read some of my lyrics if you wanna!

Just downloaded the mp3. J.Tel as a vocalist did not come across as a natural singer, he sounded like he was holding back. I know a singer and she is very confident and loves her voice (shameless plug: http://www.talykorenmusic.com/ )

We had some fun together a little while ago, i made a small music video, a zero budget video (another shameless plug: http://www.truecolor.741.com/You_are_my_Only_One.html )

So when will J.Tel make some more cool music for Focus :)

very interesting to read what everybody does for a job. I work in the music business nowadays, with 3 jobs.

my 'hobby' job is running my record labels which tries to promote unknown dutch bands and give them a step up.
My second job is my booking agency. I set up tours throughout Europe (mostly holland though)for bands from all over the globe. I work with bands like Fishbone, Aereogramme, Saian Supa Crew and Textures (and many many more).

Last, for a steady wage, i work as an assistant promoter at a venue in my hometown called Patronaat. I book bands in the venue, but i also prepare all of the productions.

Busy busy, but i love this work, it is like a dream come true.

The first version of this demo had me rapping but the sound quality was too low .. or at least that is what Jeroen claims, I still think he wanted to replace me because he knows the rappers get all the pussy ;-)

Personally I am not impressed by Jeroen's singing in this song. I have heard other stuff where he sings much better and not holding back at all. I think Jeroen is one of the most musically talented persons I have ever met... This song doesn't impress me - the best thing about it is the text ;) ... and Brenda's voice...

I agree with you about Brenda's voice - she is one of the best singers I've ever heard, not just based on this song alone ofcourse. I've known her for about 10 years and have many other tracks by her, plus I've seen her performing several times.

And yes, Jeroen can do much better but please remember: this is just a demo, he was never meant to be the one doing the honours on the final track. The very first demo version (with me rapping) both parts were sung by Brenda.

As for my text: I can do much, much better as well, and I have, believe me ;) Like I wrote earlier, this is one of the first times I tried 'real' song lyrics instead of rap lyrics, and it shows.

I used to work with composing and producing music fulltime at Funcom in Oslo some 10 years ago. I left the job to be together with my girlfriend (now wife), and I guess I was a little bored with it. After that I took an education to become a teacher, worked as a programmer for a company that did games for XBox, PS2, Gameboy Advance etc. (made my first game - for the GBA.. .. yiha!). Unfortunately the company went bust, and I had to find myself teaching kids for half a year before I luckily got my current job (I love networking)....

Today I work as a senior programmer with a company that makes games for mobile phones (TAO, go down that hall and kick those guys that implement sound in j2me in the nuts - will ya?!).. On the side of that I do audio projects here and there when they pop up and I have the time. I play some music too, and had a few records out with a band a couple of years ago (not my music) - didn't hit though ;)

Not much computerrelated for me.

I have worked with all kinds of things, for a swedish organization promoting the usage of condoms, as a substitute teacher, in a bar in London, ... The longest work experience I had though, was in a cooled warehouse driving the forklift and doing some stockkeeping.

I have also been studying quite a lot of philosophy (of science, ethics, history, political, cognitive) and might continue bits of that, though I am now mainly studying to be a physician (medical doctor). I started those studies up north in Umeå, but am as of this autumn continuing them in Odense. Reasons for the move was that my girlfriend since four years started her medstudies here in January and also the improved climate (I am from the south myself).

Nice to read this,

I've been always working with computers, starting out
as an all round system administrator, later I moved away
from that, and concetrated only on unix/linux full time.

IBM AIX, Sun Solaris, Debian, Redhat etc.

Currently working @ a big University in Switzerland, enough time to work on CSDB & The Digital Dungeon :)

Like most (?) people in our subculture, i started out with technical support (though my education is in history and archaeology), and after a few years dealing with idiots (=customers) for different companies (Xerox, Symantec etc) in different countries, I'm now a Hostmaster at a big webhost. Which basically means that I sit most of the day at the office talking rubbish with my colleagues and reading slashdot, taking care of domain/dns-problems about 2 out of 8 hours a day. Very relaxing, and I can't imagine anything better (since I'm such a lazy person).

@Tdj I hgad another listen to J.Tel track on my other PC (which has better speakers). The track is interesting. If i were to break it up, the keyboard sounds i really quite liked, they reminded me of sounds used in films from the 70's/80's i was thinking of Escape from New York, that use similar sounds. The drums were ok, slighly bland. I'm still not sure about J.Tel's sing, i could picture more depressed person singing the lyrics, as J.Tel did not come across as heavy enough. The female singer sounded good. I thought the track was about 1 minute too long. It starts off good, J.Tel sings and then the female sings and then T.Jel appears again and then the track drags on for another unnecessary minute. So overal the tracks has some very good points.

Quote: The first version of this demo had me rapping but the sound quality was too low .. or at least that is what Jeroen claims, I still think he wanted to replace me because he knows the rappers get all the pussy ;-)

Electronic music and slighly bland singing can work. The slight rap sound without the full on rap was reminding me of the Pet Shop Boys and their track West End Girls. When i first heard West End Girls i was thinking, oh, that sounds like upper class rapping, alomost talking with a hint of rhyme and T.Jel is doing that alittle on his track.

When I was still working on this track (circa 1999) I was in touch with one of the best Dutch rappers to do the verse, but he wanted to write his own lyrics instead so that fell through. Then later on I found another group, and this time it was me who proposed to have them change the lyrics.

Nowadays, I would probably opt to drop the rap completely.

mc has to write the lyrics he's delivering himself, that's one of the few unbreakable rules.

Heh. Do you really want to play that game? Ever heard of the term 'ghostwriters'?

A few years ago I was an active member of the Dutch hiphop underground, famous for my lyrics (not so famous for my rapping), even amongst those who are now appearing on my television screen (for the Dutch: I killed Baas B. in a textcee compo! Okay, not so hard but still ..). And I've had this discussion there many times. Most people there agree with you, but I don't. I feel, sure, an mc can do his own lyrics, unless he sucks at writing them. Then personally I prefer it if somebody else does his. But in that world it's a big no-no, well, at least they act like it is. Unbreakable rule my half-Surinam ass ;)

c'mon man, you sound bitter. there is always a possibility to switch on to another genre. :)
if an mc sucks at writing, it's exactly like he couldn't keep the beat. i know about exceptions to this rule - ice cube writing the whole nwa joints etc. - but i don't consider them fine and let's do it too, won't hurt. and i doubt that anyone connected with the subculture will. 'cause hip hop is probably the only genre where there are/should be no professional lyrics writers, and ghostwriters are hunted down. personally, i'd like to keep it that way.
we're driving off the topic and far away, yeah, noticed that.

Don't worry man, I'm not bitter, at least not when it comes to this ;)

Also, I've never been wanting to score 'big' as a rapper because basically, I suck. Big time. I've known this ever since I first tried it out (1990 I think), and even though it hurts me sometime, it hurts me even more that I can't sing. At all. Man, if I only were able to sing, life would rock!

Eh yes, off topic indeed .. carry on ;)

I work as a system & network administrator at a foundation that houses and cares for mentally challenged people.
Nice job although I need some more action over there once in a while.

Besides that I have a small homestudio where I produce Electro on semi-professional level.
I'm doing gigs too once in a while. Highlight was playing at a sub-party of Sonar, Barcalona last year.

don't have serious job... however few times a month I do some things concerned with computers and networks... web design , pc upgrades , network mainteance and so on :)

think about it:
I take care about computer systems in one company, I upgraded all low-end worker PCs and since 6 months they haven't called me even once - so is it good to really make this kind of job properly? those guys don't know what's going on anyway heheheh ;p well... just kidding , it's good to work properly ;-)

Hmm... I learned insurance broker... found it too boring working in an insurance... went to university coming out as Master of Arts in politics and history and wrote a book about Open Source Software (http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/383342883X/028-6369008-6966921?..).

Besides working now as freelance webdesigner and IT-something in a small company, Mr.Lee/Cascade and me made a patchmanagement software (http://www.vislogic.de/eng/pm_info.html), which we are selling. Furthermore I support Mr.Lee's company (VisLogic) as good as I can...

A few years ago I met this guy who had done a record himself, produced another one, and was very fond of my lyrics. We started a project together and as a side-project he would also teach me how to sing. Then he crashed hard due to drug-problems and left the country to live with his dad in Thailand.

No really, I'm not bitter ;)

*What kind of job did you do?*
After 4 interesting years in games industry working as an artist i quit (maybe quit isn't quite the correct word). After 12 months of traveling i felt great had fully re charged my flat batteries. I needed that, as the working in the games industry is a killer (long hours, sometimes late nights, weekends, no time off.. i could go on).

*What kind of job do you do?*
These days i am a surveyor. The hours are good, Monday to Friday (no weekends or late nights) and the pay is good (better than the games industry). I'm out and about in the fresh air and for most of the time i feel like i am my own boss. I get to take breaks when i choose, have pub/bar lunches and it keeps me fit :D

Well I'm also from Serbia, and like Jailbird said "you shouldn't be too picky considering jobs". I worked in a scrapyard, later advanced to an aluminium melting facility, then went to college, while studying took care of few gaming and internet caffes, made programs for runing restaurants, cable TV, some trading companies and an accountant application. Last three years I have been assembling and selling pc-s and I must say its getting more and more boring every day. I install "cisco" networks, phone systems and run cable for CarQuest. I also upgrade Davita Dialysis systems with switches, modems and little networking.
My side job is working at a computer store. Repairing and building computers for idiots who constantly infect them. I also repair Monitors, stereos and some game systems. Basically anything with circuitry I can repair. I need mostly VISUAL contact with the object to repair it, so don't ask me how to fix your xxxxxxx...

The SAD thing here is, I'm still using a 1GHz p3 system (1 gig ram, 256mb ati videocard). I build systems 3 times faster than my own, but sometimes, the newer systems seem slower to me.
