Top of the Month
Hello All,
the first Thing one sees when coming to csdb are the "latest Releases". Normally, this is a good starting Point for fresh Stuff, but from Time to Time the latest Releases get overflooded by useless Stuff.
My Idea is to add a Top of the Month to the Main Page, which would show the top-rated Stuff from the last 30 days.
What do you think ?

Yep! Good idea!
Even better than my idea of making the custom view even more custom.
And it's easier to implement me thinks... |

Yes good idea. I'd favor a visual representation of those though, to make the frontpage somewhat more appealing. |

i see one major problem with that idea.... before you can create and present such a list, a reasonable amount of people must vote for the releases.
or to rephrase, what you are asking for is that someone else goes through the latest releases, and filters the "useless stuff" for you :)
i'm not sure how well this could work...
i thought about a "threshold" based system before too (so one could display only those releases which got ranked higher than a certain threshold), but it suffers from the same problem.
what would be really much more interisting imho would be some (not so annoying) way to "force" users to vote every now and then :) without that, all voting based filtering is kinda useless. |

Add old-school download quotas to the system. ;D The more you vote, the more you may write in the forums, download etc... ;D |

hehe, i'd vote for good old accessbits in that case then. give new users access to one general shitchat forum, and anything else when they prove beeing worthy =P |

groepaz: I dont think thats really a problem... if there are not enough ratings for the last 30 days, then there is fewer stuff in the top of the month.
I actually think this might even improve "rating-laziness" (at least for new stuff)

Groepaz, the voting thing I agree with.. certain things are obviously voted for.. and others not a single vote, a random thing for things that haven't a vote would be good to randomly display.
I've found a lot of things I've never seen originally when they were released.
as for the forum thing.. well it's either anyone can post or a bit elitistm.
a points system would be easiest way to deal with it like other sites.. say +10 for an upload.. -2 or -3 for a download.. +2 for a vote etc..
it's all balance and being objective.. always tricky.

'+10 for an upload'-only is a bad idea:
look what rough did to the database some time ago, tons of useless uploads
and assidious with his bullshits comments, that should get many negative points as well
there has to be -20 if it gets removed by a mod for a good reason and -100 if the file is broken and things like that
basically i support the threshold idea and the point-system-for-activity :-) |

-100 is a tad harsh.. i've ported a load of things and some have read errors.. so i hope i can get an overdraft, or i'm in trouble.hehe
I know what u mean about BS things, that are uppd just here for the sake of it.
I guess there will be people who play up no matter what you do.. in the end it's only making them look stupid.

the more harsh it is the better the quality will be
less harsh => more things added
that is still left to discuss, but a basic system like this seems reasonable, what do we need to get that implemented? more 'yes, i like the ideas' ?? :-) |

To be honest, i dont like the idea of giving points to voters. This only leads to endless trolling.
And i dont want to be picky or so, but its kinda offtopic.

If the last Month only had Junk, then its in the Top of the Month.
I think its better to implement a simple Idea now, then coming up with complicated Stuff how to give Points to Folks who give/give not the "right" Points to the Releases.

The Topic is "Top of the Month", not "How to scare away Users" or "How can we admins judge the users".

you could also add a "most downloaded this month", or most viewed. |
