SID chip goes comercial (again)
Look at this :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_One_(Alicia_Keys_song)
quote :
The song has a sample of a synthesizer of the SID sound chip found on the 1980s computer, the Commodore 64.
hope she has a sid station.. |

sounds like wikipedia bs to me -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktUSIJEiOug ... where exactly can you hear SID? i cant, the synth stuff sounds like typical FM, not very much SID-like at all *shrug* |

i guess we need to hire a SID-professor to get an analysis done, so we can convince the wikipedia editors (as that phrase was just removed). calling SID detektif crew! |

from my studio knowledge.. it looks / sounds like she is using a jupiter 8.. I've only ever seen one REAL one about hhm 12 years ago.. before their recent emulation..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktUSIJEiOug
2:28 or just after, I'm about 60% certain that's a j8, due to the coloured buttons.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XxnPH5qahY
there is a tune I heard on the radio the other night while I was trying to find something that does sound like a SID sound. I'll have to try to remember what it is, does sound more "sid-ish"
thing is even things like the Juno 106 can sound similar to a SID, IF you program the patches right. It's tricky to say as I didn't hear any tell tell signs which make it very obvious.
although I know of 1 tune that does use c64 sounds BUT they are from RE-FX's quadrasid, I could tell a mile off. As the "sound" is the same but the notes aren't.
I'll have to try to figure out what that other song is in the meantime though.
After what happened with doughnut eating fool, they would be rather stupid to take tunes now.. As they think they may get outted as talentless losers. |

i got curious and took a closer look. now i'm 99.999% sure that it's a jupiter 8 in the video. :) which doesn't mean it was used on the recording of that tune. ;) |

Actually there IS a point to all this. The Commodore 64 has been around for approximately 30 years. During this time, a gigantic amount of SID music has been created by many talented composers. The Commodore has remained very popular and SID music has been very popular as well. Whether or not the Alicia Keys song in question contains fragments of SID music is a question that can be only be verified by the SID CSI team. With all the millions of people out there that have enjoyed a 64 throughout the years, it is totally possible that a number of songs within the structure of popular entertainment have integrated within them SID music or have been influenced by SID music. Never underestimate the power of the Commodore 64. |

Check the new 'Jeugd van tegenwoordig': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbhnJN8XPB4
Check more of his stuff: Bastian/Seymour Bits/Comtron/DJVT.
That producer uses the SID station for most of his work. |

I guess using a sid or an emulation of it (unknown 64 / quadra sid) etc is just different from the normal arp / moog / juno sounds is part of the reason.
I sample myself, but a snippet is one thing, taking someones whole tune is different.
There is a tune, done in reason which impressed me, it uses their subtractor synth. It's tweaked in realtime and it's not bad. I guess with the new arpegiotor in v4 you could do even more tricks. A lot of people on the forum there like the sid sound and have been messing around with things like thor in the new reason to try to get a sound a like.
if someone else besides me on here uses reason check this >
http://www.reasonstation.net/songs/upl/2006/
And look for a track called '1subtractorstereoversion.rps' (about 2 and a half pages down).
I was quite impressed by that and it's just using subtractor synth tweaked/automated in realtime

btw: 'the jupiter 8 part' of the alica keys song always reminds me a bit of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbzGGN7D3RI rather than the sound of the sid chip. |

higgie , the sound is probably an old synth but the one in the video might not be, as I just got CM mag this month, and I'm pretty sure it's the same keyboard, and it isn't a J8, but has the same coloured keys, so I'm guessing its another one by Roland. Although I'm not so bothered to trawl vintage synths to find out. |

No Sync is a guy. I found him, and his friend Deaks, and brought them into their first "real" scene group Suicide. Having talked with No Sync on the phone countless times, I can confirm he is in fact _not_ Alicia Keys. ;)

Tons of names here are added to fill the forms as complete as possible. If someone objects they should remove their name themselves.
You have strange views what a release is, what should be uploaded, and now you also say real names are a nono.
Instead of playing your inner controlfreak out here, you should better get a job as tax officer or similar bureaucratic occupation.

it isn't my view, it's the rules which all moderators and perff agreed on. (and the personal info rule was established before i became moderator if i recall correctly) if you don't agree with them, use another database. we do not support mindless datamining here. |

Sorry, this sentence is bullshit. My personal information belongs to me and I decide on my own if I want it published or not. And hence personal information should only be added if the one adding it knows that the person whose info is to be added doesn't mind. When in doubt, ask.

Look..
HVSC uses real names and (handle), where real name is known.
This has helped us to find people on the net, and verify tunes.
If you do not wish to use real name field, then delete it from the database; else people will use it! because it feels natural when adding info.

To think that you can control what information is gonna be entered in x places, by anyone, is an illusion.

It was Shark that from start used real names in HVSC.
Your personal dir/sids only have Groepaz in them, I guess because you wanted it so.
We have left out some names by request, and others after a mail.

yes, but i had to contact you guys AFTER i noticed google picked it up from various mirrors of hvsc. that mega sux. and thats why we don't want people to add realnames (and other personal data) here without asking the persons in question. |
