80 columns and ascii demos
Question: Any text demo for c64 like for example the entries at http://tmdc.scene.org/ ?
Can anything like that be done on a c64 in a 80 column mode? |

Well, I have no own coding experience with 80 columns mode, but since there IS the possibility to switch to 80 columns modes even on a c64, why shouldn't it be possible?
Check this out, for instance:
C65 Emulator
Or the Dox to MMGold:
Maniac Mansion GOLD [neoram]
(if you have no NEO-Ram, emulate it).
I just do not know whether and how you also can define 2000 instead of 1000 values for the color RAM.
Good luck

strangely I never saw any ascii demo on c64. I think some are cool. |

I know a few quite interesting ones written in basic, though only in 40 colums mode,e.g.
100% Basic Demo |

Quoting chriz74strangely I never saw any ascii demo on c64. I think some are cool.
What exactly do you mean with ASCII demo?
There's the BASIC demo category here on CSDb, as well as PETSCII Graphics. |

I did a port of Hardcore Petting, my Commodore PET demo to C64.
It uses only standard textmode (monochrome even) and doesn't look very nice, but here it is just in case someone is interested. :) |

Here's a little ASCII (or PETSCII to be precise) crapmo I did once: Xtreme Mega Comeback
I think the reason there aren't more textmode demos is that it usually looks better if you use a customized charset e.g. with dithering. So in fact there are a lot of textmode effects, they just don't look like it.
About 80 columns char mode on C64 - it's emulated in bitmap. You can kinda define 2000 color RAM values though, but it's on the other axis, i.e. 40x50. See HCL's half char mode in Edge of Disgrace.

I mean a demo written in ASM w/ modern demo effects in an 80 columns ASCII screen mode. |

Hm, actually there's no real 80 column mode on the C64. You can fake it with interlace (flickers) or by reducing the charset width to 4x8 (unreadable). |

textmode demo on the c64 would be petscii and 40 columns. since the c64 has neither ascii nor 80 columns. obviously. =P |

Well ok then. I vote for more petscii / 40 columns demos. |

I disagree with it not looking nice. :) I wonder if the C64 port qualifies as a C64 scene production, and thus should get an entry here? I would say yes... What do others think? |

I considered adding it here, but wasn't sure if it was warranted or not, so I choose not to since I didn't want to add more crap to CSDB. On the other hand, considering the amount of crap already on here, I guess it wouldn't have made much of a difference! :) |

I would definitley opt for adding it here. Any other opinions? |

Add it! The more crap, the less crappy all of my crap seems. |

Alright, I think I actually will do a bit of C64-enhancing of the port (add a SID-tune, maybe some different colors) and add it. I bet more than half of the 90.000 releases on here is crap anyway, so a bit more won't hurt! :) |

Don't change the colors please. I think it should be kept as close as possible to the PET original, which btw wasn't crap at all, considering the platform. |

I agree with Cruzer. A fitting SID tune would be a nice touch, though - if one wants it 100% like on PET, he can turn down the volume then. :) |

Cool! Let's launch a Petscii Demo Compo. I can put some two original commodore cartridges as prizes (loose). |
