C64 Demoscene PPT presentation
Hi all!
I'm going to give a 45 minutes presentation about C64 demoscene (yes in my work we are encouraged to talk about our hobbies/lifestyles at monthly talks and now its my turn)
what will you show(slides), highlight or not mention at all(I guess DK's porn stuff :P)
the audience: tech people (around the world), who probably had c64 back then...
it needs to be entertaining, because i've seen other presentations with interesting subject when they totaly wasted the potential.
so?

Go through the top 10 demos on the right, plus some classics not to be missed, e.g.Access Denied; can you show short clips? Otherwise the best scrrenshots. A bit of tech talk like NUFLI and stuff, emulators (even on the frekkin' iphone! ;), perhaps mention some of the nifty new hardware like 1541Ultimate; coolest thing would be of course if you could set up a real one! :-) |

IMHO that'd be the perfect way to bore them to death =P
i would try to (re)introduce them to c64 stuff first - show some old games they might remember, and then point out how they happen to come with crack intros. then show some of the well known crack intros (triad, flt etc) and maybe go on with one or two simple classic demos that emerged from it. and then show two or three "top" demos - but choose them wisely. things that are hot for "us" are not necessarily interesting for the uninitiated. |

I would suggest you do this in Prezi instead (www.prezi.com). It's a "zooming" presentation engine which gives a bit more life to the presentation. Also it can handle YouTube clips flawlessly (where as PowerPoint is pain in the ass when it comes to video). More over, Prezi uses a mind map model as base instead of a linear slide show, which in many cases is a more efficient way to give something structure.
It's quite awesome, I use it exclusively now instead of PowerPoint or KeyNote.

A bit of shameless self-ad, but i still find that this 4k of mine gets the point across to non-techies pretty well:

Especially if you take the 4K and convert them into a 64x64 bitmap and put that on a slide. |

Even 32x32 assuming png-format using RGBA-pixels. :) |

if there will be non technical ppl, you can show them anything they will not understand. only eye & earcandy. but I doubt any non technical human can understand the beuaty of SID, anyone ever had a GF who liked SIDs? for me all of 'em said turn that crap off :) They can appreciate nice pics, and eyecandy fx (dont need to be technical just nice!) tho.
I'd say just bomb 'em with demo clips, pictures and musics, show also new games, etc. Dont go into details, non c64 ppl will be not interested in technicals. Best would be to cut the best demo fx's into a nice video. (like the beginning of the "vakondok" demoscene documentary movie)
edit: on a second though a little detail wont hurt like 64k mem 1mhz cpu, compare them to todays's pcs, basic gfx & sound specs |

ready.

@Oswald: actually my wife like calm and slow SID tunes, so I usually have two types to music disks using GRG's sidplay: one to listen to when she's around and one when she's not. |

I assumed we had established embedded video snippets already. |

Oswald: There may not be so many females appreciating SID sounds, but then that's the same for males as well. I can confirm that there are some women who don't mind much about SIDs. However, it's a good idea to leave out the bleepy ones with little or no bass. |

Try to explain why the c64 is interesting. Draw parallels to something people can relate to. Eg:
"Even though the motorcycle is invented, people still compete to see who is fastest to climb alpe d'huez in tour de france. Even with limited driving skill you could easily reach the top faster on a motorcycle than professional bike riders, still its fascinating to watch tdc because we know the effort put in riding the bike. Its the same with, making demos on a c64. Any newbie with a new computer and Photoshop, a OpenGL library or 3d Studio can do stuff in a higher quality than what can be done on the C64. However, its still pretty interesting to see how far we can push the machine."
Tell a SIMPLE version of the limitations of the C64, so people get a feeling of why this is a challenge. I assume you are going to focus on graphics, so tell that the c64 only has 16 colours. Show them a char grid and explain that normally only 3 colours can go into each of these (Don't go too much into any advanced stuff). If your are going to focus on demo effects, compare the speed of a c64 to a present day pc. Then, after you have told them about the limitations, you can use some time on showing pictures / demos.
If you just show them pictures and demos without any background knowledge, I don't think they will get the point. |

@All
Thanks for the comments
I did this webcast an hour ago and i think people liked it.
What I did was a idea Greopaz had (actually I had the same idea ;) at c64scene.pl where I sdked the same question). Turned out that starting from games then from Eaglesoft intros, going todemos and then to pixeling was a good idea..
So the story was like:
- show few games
- show intros
-sjow few demos screenshots (mainly vector fx)
- show what are the limitations of hires + lores
- show the pictures from 1984-2012 and the fact that we still progress wirh new styles, techniques and quality of the pics...
so i focused on pixeling.
it was a webcast so no animation/soud allowed but next time when i have the oportunity i'll show one demo (probably one of the Elysium demos) and discuss the trics rather than show the c64 demosscene history.
thanks for feedback. and I can see it was a mistake to ask that late becuase so many good ideas apeared.
CRRN
ps.
I even used DK stuff (not the porn thou) from his Breakpoint'08 presentation.
gave the right credit even :)
