Disk transfering problems and questions

Some help please!!!

I have got an XE1541 and tried to copy demos to 5,25" disks by using Star Commander. Well,. most of them loaded and ran fine on my C64 (with a 1541 drive, I think it is the 1st model which is damn big!), except for at least two precious demos that I beg to watch on the real thing one day..

At the beginning I had problems with Soiled Legacy. It seemed that I wrote it in a disk, but when I tried to run it on the real thing, it crashed just after the zoom logos. I tried to transfer it again in a new disk, it still crashes at the same part. The part selector neither helped me to watch at least parts of it. Everything crashed. This had happened months ago..

Yesterday, I decided to connect my drive with the XE1541 and the PC and copy the demo Cycle to a disk. I used Star Commander again and choosed "Full Disk Copy". On the real C64 I get the 3-musics selector but after choosing each one of them, the demo doesn't load right and everything crashes there :P

Actually,. I could know what to do, if you could also explain me what "BAM disk", "Safe BAM disk", "Extended Disk" and the rest means. What's the diferrence between them, what is the best for the above two demos and which options should I prefer for most demos. Apparently, it seems like it takes at least 10 minutes to copy a single D64 file to one side of a disk. So,. I didn't wished to spend my time for some trial and error with all these options.

I am wondering also: Does it really take so much or am I doing something wrong??? 10 minutes for a disk side?!

Make sure that the disks you're using are 100% error free. It happened to me several times that SC overlooked errors on the 5,25", even if I turned on error detection.

BTW.

Basically, if you have already transferred a disk to C64 with the 'full disk copy' option, you did everything right.

To fasten up the transfer, turn on turbo or warp transfer mode, and turn off the 'verify write' option (it's off by default). 10 minutes is indeed a bit long.

Also, sometimes when disk copying ends, I get the message "Timeout warning/error/orsomethingIdon'tremember". Even in most cases, but most things load fine on my C64 even after that message. I hope that XE1541 is ok for a modern Athlon PC. During older times, I had problems at disk transfering with modern PC when it was about CPC disks, so that I had to use an old 486 instead. Perhaps I could try that with the XE1541 too.

But what about the meaning of BAM copy and Extended disk?

Is there a way/programm to check if a disk has problems? I bought 50 new disks at Breakpoint, so I guess I shouldn't have that.

Also,. are there any other programms except from Star Commander for transferring to disks?

BAM, block allocation map,
it only copies the used sectors/blocks

about transfer, use a real dos, no windows,
then it will work 100%

use warp mode

Extended disk means that a more than 35 sectors can be copied. This is of no importance for the two mentioned demos.
I always use Full Disk Copy, as the time difference with an XEP cable is insignificant.
Be sure to have WARP mode enabled both in TRANSFER and DRIVE options! Warp transfer is both the fastest and the most reliable transfer mode. That should get rid of the timeout messages at the same time.
From SC 0.83.10 on (maybe a little earlier), there's a smart formatter built in:
Hit F2 to bring up the command menu, select FORMAT and check the Allocate bad blocks and sectors option. Now if you get less than 664 blocks free after formatting, you know you have a bad disk. It's not 100% bullet proof, though, which means a disk could still be bad even if it shows 664 blocks free.

soiled legacy was 100% done on a c128dcr, so it shouldnt have much problems on a c128d either imho. The bug is most probably caused by the loader. AFAIK it has not yet checksum checking added (or has it, Krill?:), and that can cause some sectors to be loaded incorrectly thus the demo hangs...

Ancient thread revived for the sake of discussing the transfering of floppies!
As suggested in this thread.

I was wondering how we can conduct an investigation to the quality difference between NIB'ed en copied images.
And I mean a work plan, not just something like "compare copied and NIB'ed D64s". Then elaborate on how, and how many images and such...

Any thoughts?
