History of C64 flames (animation-wise, that is)

Was just wondering a little about C64 flame animations, when they first appeared, which might be the best, etc.

'Google books' shows me 'The History of Visual Magic in Computers: How Beautiful Images are Made in CAD, 3D, VR, and AR'.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----
Excerpt:

Particle Fluids and Special Effects
Computer Graphics has always been, and may always be, a trick to create what looks realistic, to get the viewer to suspend disbelief and to accept the virtual world; however just creating lines and even curved surfaces are not enough. It is impossible to create realistic looking un-predictable things like flames, smoke, fluids, and hair blown around. These are non-deterministic behaviors, or stochastic processes, based on theories of probability.
...
Since 1982, the CG field had one stunning example and demonstration of non-deterministic behaviors after another. The simulation of gaseous and fluid phenomena and other environmental effects (clouds, collapsing piles of dirt or boxes, trees in wind storms, etc.) astonished viewers and developers alike. With improvements in computing power the development of realistic looking non-deterministic activities made more realistic behaviors possible, and in real time.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----

Ok, since the C64 has such limited resolution, and did not benefit from 'improvements in computing power', it seems like a good challenge. So how did developers handle this?

- first instance of flames
- best instance of flames
- other related phenomena like water waves, wind blown effects, etc.

you can not really optimize this effect, except faking it. so you'll not find huge programming revolutions here. its basically averaging 4 pixels, and moving the result upwards.

When I think flames, I think of Salamander and Myth. Both use the same animations by the legendary Bob Stevenson.
