VICE 8580 emulation - Turbo Outrun and Ghostbusters

From my distant childhood memory these games didn't play the samples for Turbo Outrun or Ghostbusters on a real C64C equipped with a 8580 SID. I was so jealous of my mates who had the older 6581 SID at the time and were able to hear all the samples in their full glory.

In VICE 3.1 and 3.2 the samples are very clear for both these games when using 8580. It doesn't seem to matter what method I use for sampling. VICE 3.0 plays those games sounds much closer to how I remember them when using 8580 emulation, i.e. no samples.

I only stumbled across this as I was in the process of upgrading and releasing Z64K to use the logic in the latest ReSID from VICE and noticed the unexpected audible samples using 8580 when testing the above mentioned games. I will be holding off on this release for now.

I only have access to a c64 and c128 with old SID now so can't confirm with certainty if this is an actual bug with ReSID in the latest versions of VICE. Is someone able to confirm if indeed these games don't audibly play the abovementioned samples on a real 8580 equipped machine?

On further investigation and debugging it seems VICE Commit r32576 - SID 8580 filter improvements is the change that caused the samples to become audible for all chip models.

In VICE you can select SID model. One is a 8580 with digiboost.

Select the regular 8580 'should' lower the digisound (for those types of digis) in Vice.

Is this what you are asking?

I"ve tried all that. What I'm asking for is confirmation the filters for the 8580 ReSID emulation are correct for Vice 3.1 onwards. I don't remember hearing samples in the opening tunes of turbo outrun on real hardware equipped with the newer model of SID.

sounds like a bug to me... its try that on 8580 samples are almost (!) unaudible, ie you CAN still hear them, but very silent - but it seems a bit extreme after those changes. please make a ticket on sourceforge, leandro might want to look at it :)

Cool. Thanks for confirming. I've raised a ticket on sourceforge as suggested. :)
