Best VIC Chip to get?
..aka is there a best of both worlds variant around?
Currently i again stumbled upon Ilesj's image upon VIC II lumas.
As for now i have an old VIC II in my C64 Reloaded, just because i want to avoid those grey dots/stripes opon rastercolor changes.
To my knowledge old VIC doesn't have those, but only has 3 lumas - whereas the new VIC has the grey dots problem, but 7 lumas.
So hardware gurus, what's your or what is know to be the BEST VIC around?
Afaik there's no new VIC without grey dots?
So, get an old R3 or old R5? Or get a specific new VIC revision? |

only the 6569R1 VIC has 5 (not 3) lumas. it's unlikely you even find one :) R3 vs R5 shouldnt matter much, the colors are slightly different perhaps. |

Yes, the R1 is quite different. In addition to the fewer lumas it also has a bug with the lightpen interrupt logic. I think that will break any attemps at stable rasters using the lightpen trigger method. The higher revisions do not seem to have any major discrepancies as far as I have seen. It could be just tweaks for better yield perhaps. |

If you use Reloaded MK2, make sure to update firmware.
I had some issues with strange colors regardless of using the older or newer 6569 (ceramic or plastic) and it was solved when updating firmware (detection was apparently wrong).
Afterwards picture was worst using the ceramic version.

ceramic would be R1, so no surprises there, it has worst picture (also gets very hot) |

Weasel and i have been testing some VICs at his place with my ReloadedMK2. Ofcourse with the current firmware. There were some differences with the old VICs, not major, just minor. I guess those were R3s and R5s.
Still i would prefer to have a new VIC in, but those nasty grey dots.. Sigh.. |

I was hoping for some logical/behavioural differences. Purple and blue seems more like your domain. ;) |

Maybe some minor differences in color. Nothing i could totally put a finger on. Some seemed cleaner in picture than others. I should have taken pictures back then. In the end it was some A-B testing which picture we liked better. Sort of. So it was mostly a spread in manufacturing..
I wished there was something like "get exactly THIS revision, it's totally the best picture you can get". |
