Replacing 8580 with 6581
I don't know if this is the place for hardware questions but...
Is it possible to replace an 8580 SID with a 6581 SID? |

Sure, just don't do the reverse. The filters and stuff will sound weird though. |

Mh, I think 6581 and 8580 work with different voltage. I tried to exchange the 8580 SID chip of my Plus/4 SIDcard witha 6581, and the final result was no sound and a lot of heat. |

It shouldn't be too much of a problem as 8580 use 9V and 6581 use 12V. When I tried it, I got very unusual and often unusable filters but the 4 basic waveforms were ok. |

I'd be careful with mixing SIDs. I heard of a few people that tried putting a 6581 into where once a 8580 was and the 6581 didn't survive for too long.
There's a place on the net where you can get a 6582, it's basically the same as a 8580, only that it has all the sample-playback capabilities of a 6581. I NEVER heard of anyone using it, but the seller is a regular on comp.sys.cbm and comp.emulators.cbm and seems to be trustworthy.
Here's the URL:
http://www.mergetel.com/~blitz/C64/index.html
But beware: One chip cost's US$25, excluding shipping, you get 3 C64s on the local fleamarket for the same money.
By the way, has anybody ever heard a 6582 in action? I'd love to know more about it! |

It makes it sound super funky. I've put a 8580 in a board designed for a 6581, and had to set $d418 to #$1F instead of #$1F to make it sound right when playing musix (and it still didn't sound "right") |

Wouldn't that be bad Six? 6581 boards supply 12V. 8580 needs 9V. Could be a little warm :) |

Sorry, I forgot that "super funky" has a different meaning in different places. :) Amend that to say "super crappy", and I had to set $d418 to #$6f to make it sound sort-of-right. |

Probably kinda late to post this, but I've heard that the 6582 is the same as 8580.
Can't be too sure though.
