The US DOJ got their wish in February, when the Australian government released him into American custody. On April 20th, 2007, Hew plead guilty to criminal copyright infringement charges.
The US DOJ, as do many sources, point out that this is a unique case in the fact that Hew has never laid foot on American soil, nor has he ever committed a crime on US soil, yet was still successfully extradited for his crimes. The US DOJ annunciated this fact in their statement on Friday, reveling in 51 month sentencing of Hew Griffiths.

So it appears that Hew was not safe on Australian soil, where according to his lawyer the penalties would have been less severe.
is this something to be proud of? |

it sets a scary precedent. Logically, I can be extradited to the US to face charges for something that isnt even a crime in australia, if the US government applies enough pressure to the australian government.

Scary indeed. The way things are going there soon won't be any need to extradite from Australia, as we'll become the 51st state before we know it if our scumbag Prime Minister continues to have his way.

Sorry but how the fuck is this a scary precedent?
Im quite sure that all the release they did originated from publishing houses in Australia, no US servers were used for the activities, etc?
Come on.. get real.. he took the risks.. he got caught.. and now theres his punished.. thats all there is too it..

This IS scary precedence.
Why you ask?
Because perosn that has never been to US, and have never commited crime on US soil, have been judged by US law.
If you was collecting stamps in australia, but it was prohibited in US, you shouldnt be judged by US law. You have never been to US, you are not US citizen, you cannot (apparently you can) be judged by US court. If you went to US and has been collecting stamps there - then of course it would be ok that you are judged by US court. Its their's ground - it's their law. Otherwise WTF!
There is a law in one of the states that says you cannot sleep with your wife after you have eaten garlick (yes there is such a law). I have been eating garlick with my wife in poland, and we went to sleep afterwards. Will i be deported to US and judged? However that may sound stupid the precendence has been made. Eventhou we have a law system different from saxons, and we dont give a damn about precendence - every single case has to be judged on its own. |

Sorry but seriously dont agree with you here.
Were talking about stealing software from the US.
Then removing protection and often releasing it before I has even been sold.
It would be the same if you visited a painter in his house in the usa,
Steal a painting when he falls asleep (which he just finished to sell the next day)
And photo copy it and give it away to everyone you know.
Easy enough to understand the justice in extradition there if you ask me.
Your example about garlic -> yes we all know Americans have loads of stupid laws like that, but it has no link to Poland so nothing to do with this being a precedent for garlic eaters.
But please.. give me a better example and maybe Ill change my mind, until then I do not see the harm in the extradition.
