LCD-TV

I must be going old or something, but not until yesterday (when I started playing with my 1541U) did it occur to me just how bad a LCD-TV is when it comes to C64 usage. The deinterlace it's doing will effectivly reduce the framerate from 50fps to 25fps and completely remove (destroy) all interlace effects (including old ones, as used even in old games like Rainbow Islands, to give the impression of new colors).

Can't find a way to disable the deinterlace on my Sony KDL40W2000 atleast. Maybe I need to start using that 29" CRT again...

If I remember correct, you can turn of de-interlacing on some of the more expensive LCD TV's (I don't have one of those myself, so don't ask me about which brands and models).

Anyway, you should try the different "modes" on your TV, like movie, game and so on, if you're lucky, one of them will turn off the de-interlace aswell.

at least on both my LCD tv's, one i can choose between progressive and interlace mode, where interlace turns off deinterlacer (epson lcd projector), and the other one is a cheap one where there is no deinterlacer - pal signals are all just displayed as two independant fields.

ironically, i think it's only the high end ones which have these problems

EDIT: also, crap like noise reduction and friends usually work by mixing frames, also breaking such things. I found some forum pposts about that bravia doing similar shit with xbox signals, where the answer was "turn off film mode (which forces deinterlace), and turn off advanced processing options, and it looks good again"

EDIT #2: the other option if you really can't turn it off is those composite/svideo -> vga upscaling boxes, which output 50 full progressive line doubled (tripled, whatever) frames. VGA input usually bypasses all of that shit.
