C128DCR

I was stupid, and bought one of these on a hungarian ebay like site without checking the machine in action first.

Now the problem is, the PSU looks like having been swapped: the 0-1 switch is different to my other 2 DCRs, and when turned on it is pretty noisy it even shakes the housing altho in a very fine smooth manner. Apart from this the machine works nicely.

Did the DCRs all come with the same PSU, can I be sure it has been swapped ?

How much of a work it would be to swap the PSU with my other DCR (disk drive is dead with drive not ready error)?

Hi Oswald,
I have 2 128DCR. I always have problems with the drive, but I guess that is due to age.
Anyhow, both work, but one of the two has now a dead PSU. When I first got it and turned it ON I also experienced a very noisy PSU and also I could feel some vibration. This is due to the electromagnetic forces in the transformer and some component that turned loose with time, I guess. After running a few demos it went totally dead. The 128DCR works good, but its PSU died. I checked the 128DCR still worked by swapping PSUs (actually I think I checked it worked using a 128D PSU). In case the switching voltage regualtor failed, the PSU has a SCR overvoltage protection, so the 128DCR was saved!

I did not check what went wrong with the PSU, but I am planning some day to replace it with a new one self-built.
In case interested here is are a few hints on how to build your own:

but swapping them should not be too difficult. Just be careful to discharge all the capacitors before touching them. Unplug the 220VAC, of course.

One more thing: check the PSU is rated for 220VAC (or whatever you have in your country)

Osw, you could also swap the good diskdrive to the c128 with good psu. As far as I remember it's pretty easy, just a few screws and cables.
