1581 Disks
I recently got an XA1541 and am in the process of transferring all the disks from my old BBS The Addiction! to the PC. The XA1541 will take a 5.25 and make a .d64 image but it will only transfer 1581 disks to individual files, is there some program that will take those files and make a .d64 or even a .d81 image? Thanks for your help.

Some years ago I tried several tools for xfering c64 3.5"
floppies to d81 format. StarCommander was the best to
do the transfer if you have a 1581 drive - but also
like 10 minutes pr. disk! I then tried the PC tools
that are made to xfer 3.5" c64 disks on a PC which was
like 1 min pr. disk but with 10% d81s unreadble.
So I mixed the methods to get the fastest and best transfer.
So I suggest that you:
1) first do a first transfer with the PC tools (cant remember the name).
2) retransfer those identified in 1) as unreadable with a 1581 and StarCommander.
but maybe newer tools has emerged since 2008 that does the
job better ? Please tell if anyone knows :)

I have an ISA Catweasel that I used years and years ago to transfer my Amiga stuff and has been sitting in a box ever since. The Catweasel allows you to use a native PC 3.5 floppy drive and transfer 1581 disks into a d81 format. It was able to copy some ADFs that were unreadable on my A500, and I was duly impressed with the card.
If you have an old PC with an ISA slot and a 3.5 inch drive available, I will be happy to loan you the Catweasel at no charge (in the interest of NTSC scene history) in order to expedite the preservation process.
I'd like it to be sent back to me at some point, but no big hurry.

EDIT: CBA's solution looks like a solid alternative! |

I used starcommander for most of my 1581's, but I also used a pc with a 3.5 drive and used omniflop. A universal floppy reader. It seemed to do better with disks that were a bit older, as it seemed to work around minor error's on the disks better.

Ok, what I've been using is CBM4WIN to transfer the files and then a program called DirMaster v2 to create the .d81 images from the files. They seem to work in WinVice if you turn off 'true drive emulation'

You need to change the drive option to 1581 in VICE. |

Sweet, that worked like a charm, thanks! (oh and now it loads as slow as a real 1581) ;)
