MobyGames c64 entries - release by year
Out of interest, I took the data displayed at MobyGames, the self-proclaimed "most accurate database on games ever", and checked out the C64 specific data. They list 3188 games released by more than 400 publishers. I think there is some serious underestimation there though, as I could see some games were not listed. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to see what they've come up with in their prime days. See the following charts.

The lemon database lists quite some more (though 'doubles' are in there, i.e. german + english version etc) but lemon sure lacks alot still.

Mobygames is pretty accurate, but it's far from complete. Main reason is that everything you add/edit in the database gets reviewed and easily rejected if you can't cite sources or prove the accuracy of your data.
I lost interest correcting entries there long ago. It's even worse than Wikipedia. |

yeah lemon lists 99 releases for Codies as opposed to 48, and there would be a fair amount of leeway for wrong data on there just by the fact that US gold and SSI are listed separately, whereas US gold were the uk distributors for SSI and i personally have SSI games "badged" with US gold. ditto for microprose games and epyx etc.
i wouldnt disagree with the trend tho. I would have put 1987 as "the happy time" too |

Well, for all their reviewing, they also list companies double. See the chart for the top 20, there is two Codemaster entries in there, one for 48 progs, and one for 44 (which would add up to 92, nearing that aforementioned 99, though. |

'85/'86 seems too low to me, or?
Anyway, it might be interesting also to compare with gamebase64 (at least for the main publishers). |

yeah the smaller companies which rapidly went out of business would indeed ramp up the releases in the '85/'86 period. I would also hazard a guess that many of these companies will not be represented on moby either. |

I've been busy doing an analysis like CSDb - Quantify Me for MobyGames data. I wrote a little program to gather the information from their website and completed the following paper. It shows a prominent role for Commodore (what else).
