the only version from Pirates available, is the one from ESI. Nobody did a proper crack of it yet, with trainers and fastloader... sadly |

however there are basic-cheats to keep the crew from mutining.
Also you can play the wonderful tape version for faster gameplay (no gfx loaded all the time) |

hmm, i am really sure that it was not an amiga release.
at this time i only played on my c64. the best on that version was that build in ascii map, that helped alot!
i guess maybe it was an rare crack.
*sniff* a lost pearl.

Pirates! was one of the coolest games created. ESI adhered to high quality standards, though games never had trainers. It would be awesome if another group's version of this game can be located. A built in map would help much in the gameplay. |

a bit off topic but a map would NOT help the game :)
Man, it was a big part of the fun to check all isles and routes on a real map (the PC-Gold version is pretty much spoiled by that).
Also Pirates is compiled basic (afaik) which kinda sucks to add stuff to :)
You can almost always localise youself easyly and well LEARN TO NAVIGATE, hehe.
However I once thought it would be nice to have some location-log since the current position is simply stored somewhere in mem. Checked once...

As Burglar said, wo would be willing to do it nowadays. A jewel version could take months and more. |

probably half of them dont have the protection completely removed and crash somewhere under certain circumstances. the us warez scene was all about speed and not quality - and it shows in esi cracks aswell. |

The only ESI crack I experienced having bugs was Defender of the Crown. They quickly repaired and re-released a 100% version. It is quite possible that they had other flawed cracks though since unfortunately, first release speed was the priority at the time. They certainly were fast. UCF was their main competition at the time. JJ the Breaker was slower to release and presumably did higher quality cracks. ESI certainly made an indelible etching on the scene that would be spoken of to this very day, as a legendary group. |

Enthusi: Not compiled BASIC, just plain BASIC. I remember I found out how to display all pictures/portraits by studying the code.

Yes, Pirates! was palin basic with asm codes.
Got the orginal version with that map an so, but u also can take a standart map from that area where the game plays to locate most of the cities.

Yes I saw all the basic :)
Even printed it on endless paper back then :o)
But I thought it kinda used its own interpreter or something else. Been a while. It certainly has some asm-interconnectness going on since there are hardcoded adresses inside the basic iirc.
In Germany all the guys I know played it with the "Dierke-Atlas" :)
The game-development is pretty historic. I once checked the dates when the Cities are taken by different nations. Its NOT random. Also the variing wealth of towns. And of course the historic missions. There is a wonderful historic book "The Buccaneers of America" - an eye-witness report of the raids by Henry Morgan! Awesome read. Highly recommended. |
