C64 to VGA

Is there some kind of cable to connect a C64 to a VGA monitor. Do they sell it, or are there some schemes how to make one? Will it work for LCD monitors?

Optimus

p.s. That would be handy. I just got some free space on my desk and I want to code on the C64 again but I own no monitor, else I have to go to the TV ;P Else, there is the emulator option for coding, which most of you don't like but it's still handy for me :)

Greetinxx Optimus!
Cool to hear that you want to do some coding again!!

Coding on Emulator works fine for me.
Then again,I am not much of a programmer (using only monitor) at all.
But it is good enough to start with and do the details on a real C64 with TV.
Besides,I think only the $d016 ´shaking´ screws up on emulators, but the borders are completely visible and that might be of help.

Hmm,I wonder what would happen when you connect a C64 to the cards that provide TV on PC!
Somebody out there might know the answer to this one..

Once you started with crossplatformdevelopement (there's that scrabbleword again) you never want to code with TASM on the C64 again.
But that's a whole other topic (in a different sub of this forum)

I use a grandtec joymate connected to a Sony LCD. The LCD is not able to show a 50Hz-picture, scrollers are a bit jumpy, and interlace is a mess.

Thats not right:
Use Tasm with Vice and Snapshots instead of saving the files.
That pretty cool! But Crossassemblers rule, too.

speaking of the devil. i just got an update about the C=VGA in my mailbox:
---

Hi all,

At long last I have managed to make some time to update my email address book and try to answer some questions about the C=VGA.

Q. Well thanks for the info. But about the PAL 80 col display not yet
resolved, how about the ntsc display whith 80 col we use here in USA?
Thats the only function I am interested in!

A. I am not sure if Neil has that working just yet. I'll seak and answer and let you know.

Q. I would like to make a pre-order of 10 C=VGA for my GO64! Shop. What is the price for 10 C=VGA for me as reseller?

A. As the unit is not yet complete and the final price is not known I can't honestly say what the final price will be. Resellers will get a discount BUT this is not a money making excercise so don't expect any big discounts ;-)

Q. Is C=VGA compatible vith ATARI 800 out?

A. I have no idea as I don't know what the Atari output looks like or what the frequencies are.

Form Allan :

Neil has blown up the c128 (64k VDC) PAL machine I sent him which has practically brought the PAL side of things to a halt. I have managed to locate another working c128 and several c64 which are now on there way to Neil in the states. Hopefully things should get moving again soon.

From Neil :

Okay...... Also, I've been messing around with my PAL DVD player, there will
probably be a noticable flicker
on some monitors.... Even though the AL250 chip is a scan doubler, it
doesn't double the 50hz to 100hz. There
is no other chip I know of that would do the 100hz... That is a lot of data
to move. However, on other monitors,
there will be little or no flicker, it really just depends on which type is
being used:

* Newer CRT monitor - There might be a noticable flicker in 50hz mode,
because these displays are designed to
run at a higher refresh rate (native resolutions nowadays are
1024x768x85hz and higher). The
phosphors start dimming down quicker so the colors don't bleed (older
monitors and TV's phosphors are
designed to stay lit longer since there is a longer period between
scans)
* Older CRT SVGA monitor - (untested yet, I threw all my old ones out) -
probably little or no flicker...
* Any LCD screen - There shouldn't be any flicker, at all, with any LCD
screen used. The converted signal
should look pretty damn near perfect.

If anyone is concerned about the flicker, tell them to go out and buy an
LCD, you can get them for $170 now...
I remember paying that much for a 17" CRT monitor five years ago!!!

Let me know what you think.... And how many people have concerns about it.

> From Allan :

Okay, so we have a few problems to sort out but its not all bad news. Lets face it - we need the C=VGA to run on modern LCD panels (I know I do). Recently in the UK, PC World were selling 14" LCD panels for £99 - now thats a bargain !

I have updated the mailing list and hopefully I have got everybodies email addresses correct, let me know if this is not the case.

Right, I'm off to badger Neil a bit more to get it done ;-)

PS - I am updating the web site right now - next job - so all those of you who have pre-ordered recently will appear soon.
