Effect based on the last visible raster line (PAL system)

Hello,

I've created simple effect which is based on bounce easing function. Maximum value is $12c (399) - this is last visible rasterline using full borders in VIC and is edge of bouncing.

Does it make sense to assume that the line is always visible (and very last) on every displaying PAL device?

No, you can't rely on specific dimensions of the border/image at all - every monitor is different.

Results we got after releasing Borderpolizei show that the last line may be in the range of $11b...$12b

Still $12c sounds like a decent choice for what you want to do :)

If it may happen that the area between $11c and $12b will be cut off I might as well just throw the idea away now.

Thanks for the link!

No:) It is based on the assumption that there is nothing visible below "the last line" (and vice versa - visible screen area is placed above).

The reason Commodore, and others, had a border in the first place is that the edges of the screen are unreliable on old TVs. Even if you bought the same TV, same version, etc etc, you could get variances.

Commodore were OTT with the size of the border, sure, but some of it is aesthetics too.

I always test demo stuff in “full” border mode on VICE, to make sure there’s no badness outside the normal view. Then I aim for “normal” border mode. Check Bonzai’s all-border DYPP in Unboxed to see a mistake in not testing on “full” border mode :-)

You could allow the 'user' to calibrate the effect? 'Move ball down with joystick until it touches the lower edge of the screen'.

Hmm... The effect is basic screen fader, so it could be slightly irritating:)
I'm just gonna use other easing function, without bouncing.

Is there any possibility to set range of full borders in VICE? Or it could be an option for the future?
