less tall sprites

AFAIR once xbow broke the max onscreen sprites record, by using less tall sprites, what is the trick to make a sprite end sooner as 21 lines ?

It was in the demo Krestage: They made an option to display a help screen where the trick was explained.

yeps, the famous sprite crunching. yet, harder to achieve than stretched sprites (tolerance of 1 cycle or so for the d017 writes, iirc) and quite seldomly applicable =)
