C64 Double Screen Compo 2013

Remember this little graphic competition with double-sized pictures that happened two years ago? Think it is a good time for a second attempt. Keeping some requests in mind the rules changed in some cases. More freedom for the graphic artist and coders, but also - as requested - more transparency in case of using references and copies. And - for the first time - a theme.

Compo organizers are Enthusi and I (Veto) - for any questions please contact us per PM. The compo itself will be featured by c64pixels.com and Artcity. Deadline is March 31st 2013.

Okay then, people. Time to start. Here are the rules...

GRAPHICIANS

Theme is ‘water’ in a wide range of definition: Maybe as part of a landscape, something surreal, raindrops, animals swimming in a river, arrangements with geometric bodies, a person drinking something, a liquid sculpture, a deep sea motive,...
Water doesn’t need to be the only subject but should be part of picture front and shown in pure liquid state.

You can use any graphic mode you like, but please note the used format with your entry. In case of a custom format (eg mixing up FLI with custom sprites), please add a short description.

Wired stuff and compositions are allowed, but you have to accept that all originals will be shown to public with your entry, including an 1:1 check as animated gif. You are asked to provide any originals along with your entry submission.

Each entry must be executable with a mere RUN after load. The overall size of the gfx has to be “two screens”, in whatever arrangement. Scrolling is desired. Interlace does not count etc. You get the idea.

CODERS

This competition is for graphic artists but it is also some kind of ‘mini-demo-compo’.
Feel free to play with the idea of using a two screen size gfx. Add effects, create an graphics editor, do interactive stuff.

Minimum requirement is a picture scroller. So please include an option to disable all effects, animations and music (eg using space bar). Viewers should be able to watch the picture without diversity.

SUBMISSIONS

Please send your entry to following email address.
veto [@] c64pixels.spamsuxx.com
And - please - do not submit your entry on csdb before deadline. All pictures are shown on Artcity and the c64pixels.com member’s area during the compo. The d64-files will be released right after deadline.

VOTING AND PRICES

Like the first Double Screen Compo the best graphic will be chosen by email votes. More details will follow after deadline. The winner will get a personal lasered glass trophy (check out the photo).

For coders there is an award for ‘most interesting approach’ selected by the c64pixels staff plus one guest juror. Which means this price is not just connected to technical excellence. Great design ideas might be a reason, something really useful or whatever innovative. Remember that online charmode editor by Digger he created for his entry the last DSC :) Prize is also a lasered glass trophy.

Many gfx people (most) are not able to make the setup for this. code/scrolling.

if you would provide this, you can get more to participate.

I'm sure there are plenty of coders with this routine already done (myself included), so I don't think the gfx artists will struggle to find someone to help with this.

@sidwave: you got the point, but one step after another.

sure it is a gfx competition, but the rules have also been enhanced for coders, btw because of coder's requests.
i remember questions like "could we do text scrollers", "what about interlace", "what about overlay/underlay sprites", "what about music", ...
some graphic artist were asking for custom formats too, and i hardly remember there are scrollers existing for all cases.
so decision was made to follow this "mini-demo-approach".

if there is still not enough interest (speaking of coders), we will definitely try to get some routines or people for helping the gfx artists.

Thanks Veto for mentioning my online editor Slixed: http://c64.blog2t.net/slixed/

I'll release the displayer shortly so you can use the editor to make your pic in hires + multi mode aka game mode aka Coma Light 13 mode but with with unlimited chars (bank switching).

Also you can save your pic often (as a PNG) to create the stages as animated gif.
PM me if you have any questions/requests etc. for the editor.

Now go and start pixelling!

DGGR, many games use that mode and in 'use' I mean mixed hires/multicolor but I agree very much, mastering it in as aesthetic way really is rare... but sooo nice...

redcrab: currently i am working on a mini-website for presenting the entries. when it is finished (hopefully end of next week - am quite busy at work atm) then also the first releases will be shown to public.

btw about the presentation: like metioned above the pics will be also shown on c64pixels and artcity (ac with comments/votes disabled) - but no csdb uploads before the deadline.

status right now is one finished entry by xIII/WOW.

and have to say thanks in advance for your announcements. really looking forward to a great competition :)

okay. three weeks left till compo deadline.

atm i received 2 entries. one by xiii (mentioned before) and one by jsl. got another announcement by leon :) currently the graphics are presented on artcity. please note that comments and votes are disabled till the compo deadline.
all pictures will be also shown on c64pixels.com later this week and the compo-minisite is also almost finished. csdb uploads will follow right before the voting starts.

so, i hope that some of you graphics people could manage to contribute an entry, because the vote system makes only sense with a minimum of 5 pictures. really looking forward to your works :)

The reason for the low amount of entries is probably that it has been overshadowed by the 3 color compo. It might be an idea to coordinate CSDB compos in the future to avoid overlaps.

cruzer: not sure. really. because the first double screen compo had no overlap with any other competition or party and still there were only 6 entries at last - btw with similar situation one month before the deadline (received the last 4 entries in the last 2 weeks + one week overtime).

imo the 3-color-logo-compo is no real problem here, though the 3 entries per person rule is a tough one for sure. but the need of an coder or at least somebody who knows to deal with assembler might be an obstacle. and i am pretty sure also the strict rules and the drama during the first competition is not the best thing to do for increasing quantity. some people also blamed it on the effort for creating 2 pictures in one...

actually expectations for this compo have been 6-10 pictures and imo this is still a realistic objective. and i still believe it is worth to do this kind of different competition :)

It's also a lot more time consuming to make good double-screen artwork compared to a charset logo.

Maybe if we rename this compo to the "Free Didi Double Screen Compo" the entries will soar??? (it's a joke!)

But a serious suggestion: Maybe the deadline can be extended a week or two?

yes. this is possible for sure, but there should be a reason (also happened during the first 2sc). if you are working on a picture and need more time to finish just ask.

I've made a piece of asm code/script that does that, and it's available on the web. If it's too hard to install KickAss I can offer to do the compilation as well. A webthing would be a good idea though.

so its me against JSL :)
I'm voting against extending the deadline ! :))

I really like the check.gif, I didn't realize I was so close to the original. I also send workstages to Veto so I can prove that I didn't draw over the original and I really put every pixel in Hermires 1.25 (A great tool to draw Hires !!) myself.

edit: and btw. I used Cruzer's asm to display the gfx :)

I guess the water-theme is quite forgiving looking at xIII's (great) pic. Thats great because my idea does "include" water but isn't really theamed on that subject. Would that be ok?

Redcrab: check the rules. there is also an example mentioned like "drinking water" and it should be part of the front. this is why things like a bucket with water are accepted. no need for water as main subject, but it should be there.

what will not be accepted are motives like landscape scenes with a river somewhere in the background, a sea miles away, fog, steam, ice or by indicated stuff like clouds or rainbows.

xIII: imo the check.gif proves that you pixeled the pic yourself and did not use a scan :)

btw the deadline will not be automatically extended. this will only happen if somebody is telling enthusi or me that he is actually working on a pic and needs some more time (and proves it by showing a current workstage). too few entries are no reason. would be a shame though, because the voting will be the same "select your favourites" type like the last 2sc. and this gets more interesting the more entries exist.

okay... there are two entries announced that are pure converts. those are not excluded by the rules but will be specified as 'raw convert' on artcity and the compo site. please keep in mind that they still have to deal with the water theme and - even the source is obvious - do not forget to send the original pic also.

btw these are the current specifications on the compo website:

- original motif / should be clear
- 1:1 check is okay / graphical reference used, handcrafted picture
- reworked scan / parts of the pic based on scanned material, combined with handcrafted elements
- 1:1 copy / obvious usage of scanned material, post processed by artist
- raw convert / code did all work

cruzer: sweat? i was asked recently few times... guess you people like to test the boundaries of the rules, don't you? actually sweat is more a matter how it is done. as close up - reflecting sun or whatever think yes, but as detail on a person passing on a distance i do not think so.
actually i saw a preview which shows no water except a very small glass with liquid. this is something that will be accepted, because "glass of water" was mentioned.

okay - little reminder that the votes are still going on till april 30th 2013.

so please name your 6 favorite pictures in this compo and send them to me or enthusi by pm or 'veto [@] c64pixels.com'.
if you wrote a number ranking next to your choice or mention something like "in that order" your votes will be weightened.

please also tell your friends and groupmates.

about things that i've been asked recently:
- there is no restriction for people that submitted an entry for voting. if you are satisfied with your own work (who isn't), it is absolutely okay to vote for yourself.
- weighting votes does not mean, that votes need a strict 1-6 follow-up. you can also give lists that look like "my fave is xy, could not decide which one of the following is second best" or else...

one week left for the votes.

as said before it is free to choose that the votes are ranked or not. to get this working your choice will be weightend to a points system. 42 points per person to be precise, but it is not necessary for voters to get into calculations..

and this is the current state:
more than 300 points - one entry
more than 200 points - three entries
more than 100 points - three entries

results of the public voting will be published shortly after midnight.

the jury votes for the coders will need some more time unfortunately, because of private reasons. hope this will be also done till the weekend.

naaahhh...congrats for all the participants for their excellent results in the competition. there were really great entries and it was really hard to find the only one who will be the winner... i hope, the next gfx compo will be on the same high level as the double screen compo, it makes really fun to be part of it... :-)

btw the pic still is called "a flock of seagulls" :-) its important, because it was ment as a playing with words (a flock of seagulls by yazoo - it contains two bandnames from the 80s... ah well. probably its not that important)
the "a" is part of the pictures name.

still i am excited that i have won this competition for the 2nd time. thanks to everyone who liked the picture

\o/ hooray for yazoo! \o/

I found it very hard it to rate the top 5, quite a few are *very* close in results for a reason ;)

So, overall, super cool compo with many quality entries and perfect organization. I really liked the compo page and the oregano/workstage display.

okay, one thing was still missing: the price for the most interesting approach about code.

this part relied on a jury, in names enthusi, sander and i. as you can see from the persons involved code quality is not the one and only discipline. all entries have been also checked in matter of presentation and usability. does extra effort a favour for the picture itself or other coders and graphicians?

to sum it up: there is no entry that is perfect in all categories and depending the point of view one or another work was superior (or even the opposite). these were the three final suggestions for the price...

- clarence/chorus for the impressive soft-scrolling sideborder routine and the demo-ish approach of the viewer.
- ready./level64 for his smooth koala viewer with extra features. plus releasing the source code incl makefile for executables.
- bitbreaker/oxyron/nuance/arsenic and cruzer/camelot for their open source spirit. both released scroller routines on codebase64 which have been used by many entries in this competition.

and the winner in 2013 is: ready. of level64

congratulations \o/

sidenote:
the whole compo was a real pleasure, with so much quality work. but in the end it is time to think about what might be improved for the next competition (which should happen in 2015). and the major subject is "creative presentation to support the graphics".
so as first consequence i promise that there will be no more "mute-the-tune-rule" anymore.

Quoting Veto

congrats ready.!
good choice from the jury. a deserved win.
haven't looked in the code, but it was especially the most convenient displayer in the compo for me from the user-perspective.
