Recommendations for sad SIDs (tearjerkers)?
Hey everyone,
Getting stoked for X'2016 yet?
I am, and that made me think about the X music compos.
I can't remember who composed it, but a couple of X parties ago, someone entered with a tune that was just incredibly beautiful and so eye wateringly sad at the same time, but I can't remember which tune it was. It might as well have not been a compo entry now that I think of it...
And of course I could scour all the X music entries, but I'm also curious: what is your favorite sad, sad, SAD SID that makes you cry like a baby when the emotional wheels are coming off? |

I won't be attending X (sadly), but in answer to your question, I would like to say there but 1 music/sid in the c64 world that brings the tears for me.
We can thank JCH for Chordian
I'm not sure why it makes me cry, but I do know it reminds me a lot of loss. The biggest loss in my life was my mother passing and I likely associated this sid to that pain. This sid is THE ONLY sid I ever coded a player for, to play on my Android phone. |

Well, I always found the beginning of 'Crystals' by Cane as one of most emotional and moody SIDs ever, however it gets a bit more dynamic at places. Still, one of the best of all SIDs in my book.

I am not known as an author of happy music myself ;) but I always went more dark than sad. However, two SID tracks that were created as an outlet for some sad emotions and in overall tone fit most into what you described would be 'Forgotten' and end track from 'Inside'.

lets get to more mainstream composers:

(one of my all time faves, dane is the master, sometimes all 3 channels playing their own song, still creating harmony, sometimes its like a duett, awesome awesome awesome)

(its like a bachy sad toccata in the winter ) |

Not entirely true. X-Ray / Grayscale does not produce sad songs! But yeah, their 256 byte bass sound is horribly out of tune. |

Johannes Bjerregaard's Myth Demo has a melancholic touch imo.... Also his Thunderforce music and spacegame...
And Jeroen Tel's 2400 Ad and his Tomcat tune #1 |
