open source demo
Hy
Has anyone considered starting an open source demo? I think this would be very interesting. Maybe it will reach 'Singles Collection' fame :)

What do you mean, specifically, by "open source demo"? Could you explain?

i don't know about making a full demo open source. seems a bit pointless to me. since demos are not tools or applications that other people can take the source improve and release a new tool.
but certain effect routines could be made open source by their authors. i intend to make my 3d engine open source for knowledge sharing purposes. but other than that i think the open source sw development model just wouldn't work with the scene because if someone would make a demo using other peoples open source effect engines than that would be considered lame by most of the scene.
any open source project needs a fairly large userbase that supports it with patches, bug reports and feedback in order to be succesful. unlike sw engineering or unix based hacker traditions, the scener mentality is not about reusing code but creating new stuff as much as possible. if code reuse is not the main motive than i think open source development is not the most applicable methodology |

It might be an idea to start some kind of open source project to get some more coders involved in a project if you're not able to do it all yourself. For instance, I have some loose ideas on how to make some big filled vector each frame, but since it's some pretty complex stuff, I'm not sure I could get it right myself. So getting some more brains involved might help, or maybe just be a case of too many cooks spoiling the food... |

i think open source is pretty useless on c64 demos. they're written in assembly anyway and if you want to see the code, just reset and look into the memory. |

Mihai: The idea of an open source demo on c64 is simply unpractical. I totally agree with Graham, just use a monitor if you want to code. And if you want to take part in a multipart coop demo, just give your part to TMR for Singles Collection #3 ;) |

Hello.
I like the idea, but for different reasons. It would be nice to have demos in source code form, be it open or whatever. For example, it would be nice to have Deus Ex Machina in source code form that I can immediately compile using ca65 assembler.
Why Deus Ex Machina? That way, I can look through the source code and see if I can fix it for NTSC mode. I would also go through the code and see if I can replace its IRQ loader with one that is compatible with CMD devices.
Having these fine demos in source code form would be very helpful in fixing these demos for suitable use on NTSC machines and those having CMD stuff.
Enjoy.
