worst arcade conversion?
maybe this topic is a tad lemon-ish.. what was the worst thing ever ported to c64 from arcades?
obviously its easy to mention things which were good, bubble bobble, combat school, hypersports...
but which were really dire..
i remember playing a lot of the the konami ports, that were really bad... jailbreak springs to mind straight away. oh and karnov, and seeing the original r-type, both spectrum ports (thankfully trenz did version 2)
or perhaps maybe you could admit to playing a game that was dire that everyone hated that you actually enjoyed..

(even though ppl are saying this thread is lemon-alike...)
Chase H.Q (c) 1990 Ocean
Wec Le Mans (c) 1988 Imagine (although i strangely played that alot back in my childhood :P)
Hard Drivin'
Stun Runner
....PURE HORRORS of conversions !! the arcade versions were miles better.
Isn't it funny that most of the bad conversions are these racing-alike games ? Probably because the coders were havin' a hard time getting the games to look 3D as in the arcade versions. |

Quite a difficult question to anwser.
Some arcade games just simply couldn't work on a humble C64.
I can think of afew games that should have ported very well to the C64 and did not, all thanks to a poor team:
Nemesis (Imagines's Salamanda was superior)
Jail Break (Konami should have left this for Imagine)
2 games that sould never have worked on a C64 and some how did, include:
Power Drift
Space Harrier
For me, award to worst C64 aracde conversion would have to goto US Gold's Street Fighter II. Dire! the ported graphics were a mess, and the SF-II logo was embarrassing to look at.

Power Drift?
I love the C64 conversion!
I stay with Afterburner as my choice for bad coin-op conversion topper.
Though, Altered Beast comes close too... |

I agree. Power Drift is an amazing arcade conversion, and the playability is great! Smooth graphics too.. |

WVL,both of them games were tuff to port, supposedly ash & dave did the melbourne house version of double dragon.. but fighting games, coding wise archer maclean would have been an interesting choice to convert them.
I was at a pcw show and Ian & mic were porting soldier of light at that time, I was talking to hake, from god and hake .. and someone else made a comment about no wonder they kept quiet about who coded double dragon, where that's true or not, I can't say 100%.
I do find it funny some people slated space harrier elsewhere, all because the floor didn't have the trailblazer effect on the floor ,no big deal. Speed wise it was fast and well Chris Butler did code Power Drift amongst other things.
I remember Ikari warriors took AGES conversion wise, it was out like 1-2+ years after the adverts ran for it?.In the end John Twiddy (expert cart programmer etc.) did a very good conversion of a tricky game though. I'll never know why that didn't get a sizzler, considering the task of converting it and they didn't like the arcade version,so down rated it.It was faithful to the arcade pretty much.
as for games I shouldn't admit to playing... rygar.
scout try typhoon or the us version of AB =) |

Scramble Spirits was a rather boring conversion which felt very rushed. Road Blasters on the C64 was not the world's best conversion either. Xybots is another sorry example.

There's even an apology in the docs for the A&D port of Double Dragon...
i'd have to point at Karnov for the worst port though, they didn't even put in the effort of drawing it C64-specific graphics! |

I think in the later times firms don´t want to spend much money in good conversations.
They are to expensive and due to the fact that they got really fast cracked and then spreaded the money to earn with was to less.

After reading Honesty's comment, I got to think of another conversion that made me really annoyed. I have not played the original on arcade but the C64 version of Skull and Crossbones is utter crap.
Most conversions which are sfx only usually feels boring to me (unless there's no music in the original of course), but this is a great example of an exception to that. According to HVSC the music is not converted from the original though, and the music is actually the only barely acceptable thing with this game. |
