Quoting anonymThe demo must be launchable using basic RUN. No autostart or SYS commands. While this makes sense for most categories, i think the ban of autostart doesn't so much for demo (and maybe 4K).
There have been a few feature demos with autostart (Camel Park coming to mind), and this may add to the overall experience. Why limit creativity on the supreme discipline with this rather arbitrary restriction? =)
But what i'm mostly aiming for is this. What if somebody decided to fastload the demo's starter file using Transwarp V0.64 or later, or release a onefiler that way, as the creators of Lovecats did?
Technically, you can forego the autostart (by loading the Transwarp-encoded file with ,8 only and not ,8,1), but this is not intended viewing and just the fallback workaround path for the case when autostart won't work properly due to custom cartridges or KERNALs.
And speaking of loading...
Quoting anonymUltimate 1541II+ and Retro Replay. The former is emulation, and the latter has some rather annoying bugs with autostarting files using its built-in fastload. But maybe those are the core reasons for that no-autostart rule? =) |

So, to be clear:
The 4KB entries have to be 4KB packed, with a SYSLINE and then can use all 64KB? |

FINALLY some serious rule. 4K is 4K! \o/ ;)
Uhm, just to be crystal clear: Hopefully it really means .PRG (packed including Header and SYS line) <4097 bytes, not 16 blocks on .D64... |

Not so sure about the confusion here, the traditional 4K demo rules are quite... traditional. Weirdo outliers like 4K run-time memory footprint restriction or 16 blocks (not 4096 bytes executable size) on disk are just that, weird outliers. :) |

Quoting CompyxI actually quite enjoyed those 'weird' ICC 4KB intro rules. But then again I'm a bit 'special' =) They were nice in the way that it doesn't make sense to use a cruncher at all, but need to apply the old manual bytesqueeze on directly executable code instead. =)
Yet very limiting in terms of demomaking, with no external memory for tables/data/unrolled code/etc. =) |

Thats because it isnt a 4k demo - its an intro :) |

Raistlin
Registered: Mar 2007 Posts: 689 |
For an intro, the only thing that should’ve ever mattered to crack groups back in the day was how many blocks were added to the crack.
If you’re linking a 32block game, you don’t link a 64block intro.
If you wanted to use 32k of memory, and it compressed to just 4 blocks on a 32 block game, though, why not..? So long as the game worked, nobody cares.
That’s why I never understood all these mad rules on intro compos. The main thing should just be that the intro fits on a certain number of disk blocks. |
| |
Krill
Registered: Apr 2002 Posts: 2982 |
What Raistlin said. And decidedly not what Groepaz said, this time, because technically (as in code-wise), there is no clear distinction between intro and demo, and demos evolved out of intros while they became more and more technically sophisticated over time. |

Thank you for your support and you're question. We've been following the discussion about the graphics online and want to run some testing in the weeks leading up to the party. We'll share some more information about that here. Thank you to those also who reached out directly to us.
Is there any party, video recording that you think produces the best result as guidance? I know some of the video publishers spend hours on heave post-processing and editing to make their recordings look perfect. Due to the limited time available, that won't be an option for us, but we'll try to do our best. Thank you to all of those who record the high-quality videos and have provided me with information on their technology used.
Unfortunately, the c64 (c64s really, there are many different versions with different video outputs) deliver quite a varied signal that is far from "clear and crisp" and contains bleed etc. On top of there are the limits of the streaming platforms and the viewer's hardware adds another factor out of our control.
We'll update you on the testing soon™, of course, we're striving to deliver the best quality possible. Thank you for your understanding. |

This sounds great. Actually I think you have one person in your team that have a picture that looks rather good. The Mibri show is pretty close with the colours to what we are used to see. It bleeds a bit but it just makes it look like a CRT so that is OK.
If my memory doesn't fail me...

The Mibri show is pretty close with the colours to what we are used to see. It bleeds a bit but it just makes it look like a CRT so that is OK.[...] I have to second this! Mibri's setup gives colours that look like true c64 colours and not like the Revision-stream-distorted ones (plus it handles interlace very nicely in most cases;)).
Is it correct that they used an U64 for the c64 stuff at Revision?? @Transmission64-team: if so, please avoid using it or at least check the configuration features to tune the colours right... |

Thank you all for tasking Mibri with doing more of the compo recording <3 We'll still be doing some tests, but this is important feedback.
For those who want to jog their memory, Mibri has some recordings of previous streams here:
https://www.twitch.tv/mibric64/videos
And Case also has some recordings of the streams here:

I'll let him answer the questions regarding the equipment, but one thing I'm pretty sure about is that he doesn't have a Lumafix. |

Chris Wicked recorded twitch stream on Case Youtube page is way too oversaturated, while Mibris looks good.
I have had several pictures shown on Mibris and all looks as they look here when I created them.
I use a Ultimate 64 connected via an analogue signal to my CRT and regulary check stuff I do on that one. From what I have read (I haven't tested it myself) is that the HDMI output from the Ultimate 64 makes the colours differ from the analogue output. The analogue output is stellar with the latests firmware (1.37), its only the brown that is a bit off and seems slightly more redish but its bareable.
So I suggest using analogue output if you plan on using the Ultimate64. |

Quoting KrillQuoting Copyfaultnot like the Revision-stream-distorted ones Haha, yeah, and they even ranted about the C-64's palette. 16 shades of brown master race! Yes, indeed! The compo-block moderators behaved somewhat arrogant when it came to C64 graphics, or was it just me being too thin-skinned? Plus I completely disagree with the comments (better: ranting) on the C64's colour palette being "not the best" up to "16 shades of brown" - considering how PAL works and given its mixing possibilites, it is close to the best partitioning one could come up with. Like I wrote already somewhere: this was system-bashing in a multi-platform compo! Disappointing!
Sorry for the offtopic-ness, had to get rid of it! |

Fascinating feedback here. At least for demos, I have to be honest, I'm not that fond of seeing them in Mibri's stream due to skipped frames and jitter that gets added on occasion. Scrollers should look smooth where possible. We'll do our best, but I have a feeling we won't make everyone happy. |
| |

I wholeheartedly disagree with what some said about stream quality: solid 50fps is far more important than color accuracy (and since when do ppl agree on which palette is right;).
Unless there's only a gfx compo, I would choose proper framerate over palette every time. 30fps is not cutting it :) |

I am sure that if somebody cracks the 50.125mhz to 50mhz capture conversion that is causing the stutter in pretty much all c64 video captures, that person would be a hero. |

it can be done, but the equipment needed wont be trivial :) ie capture at 50.125Hz, then slow it down to 50Hz (which wont be noticable afterall) |

Quoting TrapI am sure that if somebody cracks the 50.125mhz to 50mhz capture conversion that is causing the stutter in pretty much all c64 video captures, that person would be a hero. This doesn't concern me much, as it should produce a skipped frame only once in every few seconds. Plus most PCs cannot really output smooth video anyways, even less so with video coming in from the net. =)
However, one of my pet peeves are video ADCs which insist that PAL signal MUST be interlaced. :)
So they ignore that a C-64 (or any other machine of that era) outputs progressive 50-ish FPS video, then stubbornly add half a rasterline of toggling Y-offset to their 50 FPS output signal.
Makes for somewhat nervously twitching still pictures and de-/interlacing artefacts down the pipeline. |

Was about to send in a tune for the music compo when I noticed that "The entry may not loop and must end with silence."
How strict is the rule of not looping? Can the song loop after a period of silence or not at all? If it can, what's the mininum amount of silence required? This is a matter of participate / not participate for me as in my (admittedly anal) mind C64 songs loop. Always. :) |

The rule is fairly strict at this point since I understand that some composers have already completed and submitted tunes which have had a little more work done on them in order to adhere to it, but obviously we want your entry, so consider that even 1-2 seconds of silence is still silence... :) |

To my knowledge you must be registered with partymeister and then you can upload your stuffs there. Guess with Mandatory GEMA in germany Revision is forced to need the uploaders fill this out.
When it works at Revision, it should work for us aswell. :)

Thanks to all for making this a really good party! One of the best I've seen actually. Well executed with a razor sharp schedule and interesting talks.
Extreme quality from everyone made this look like it was X that was going on.
This is a night to remember for a long time. |

Cheers!
Please consider using Votox instead of Partymeister next time, ordered voting is so much more intuitive :) |

Glad you liked the event ;-)
It was a pity that live voting was down in partymeister. We actually talked about Votox before and there are many things I like about it as well. |

It was a great party, congrats to everyone involved, especially the orgs. It's not easy to run such a full compo and being able to stick to the schedule :)
also what groepaz said ;)
there are still a couple of things missing in Votox, but I will be adding those in the next version.
oh, and Mibri's sid set was terrific! |

Regarding Votox, you are clearly biased, but let's continue the conversation(s). Wait, who said "next time"? |
