Release id #248337 : Parallaxian Preview +DG

I'm not sure Kodiak has stopped working on this, he mentioned working on it on the 3rd of December, nothing on X/Forums would suggest he's stopped working on it or the c64.

His previous page:
https://kodiak64.com/
Doesn't seem to work anymore, which had all the nice details of the projects and advancements a few years ago just upon recently.
Hopefully he hasn't stopped, but taking down ones own page might signal else.

I would say this release needs to be removed.

Make the file invisible. Problem solved. No deleting of entries. It is a valid scene release and will stay in this database.

Sure, if that's the usual way.

It's been downloaded by 400+ people.
Pointless suggesting a full retraction it's obviously too late for that.

The justification for the release is laughable though.

It's a preview not a commercial software hence there is no need to hide the download link

> The justification for the release is laughable though.

so are the other dozen of thousands of releases of free unprotected games but that's another matter, the release is valid and stays, that's how it works, like it or not.

I specifically meant that "we are releasing this because it is no longer being worked on and the game will never be released" without actually asking or there being a post from the author, or any indication.

The natural events of find/get given/acquire, crack/package release are how it is, and the scene concessions and constraints around commercial releases is admirable and much appreciated by people still working on games.

This is slightly different though, "I can release it because its never going to be commercial" without doing any due diligence at all seems at odds with that.

Fair enough though, I hope more grace will be granted for future "previews"

What a pointless discussion :) If you don't want your stuff being released by a cracking group - do not give it to them. It really is that simple.

(And if i wanted to stir the shit a bit - and make my new game a bit more well known - i'd give a preview to some selected people who i know they cant keep it for themselves)

Sorry for the pointless discussion.

Good point though, I don't think it was given directly to a cracking group, but to a 3rd party.

If it was marketing I don't think wrapping it up in a "game is cancelled" message would be ideal, but then I'm not a marketeer so maybe.

it's not a pointless discussion, it's a great lesson on how and with who to share internal previews with :)

I have a wip game too and I have shared previews with ppl I trust, but outside of the inner circle, ppl get a unique copy that is easily traceable.
Maybe I just thought about that because of my cracking history /o\

In essence I think Quantum did the right thing, they thought it got canceled, good reason to release. But before that, they held on to the release, because it was still in active development. I think that's pretty decent for a cracking group :)

Now that it actually is not a stopped project is great, because the preview and gameplay are awesome. I think this release and this blow-out will drastically increase interest in your game.

win win \o/

They didn't check to see if it was still in development, there are posts specifically mentioning it in November and a post on the 3rd of December talking about the struggles of developing games.

And yes, being more care full who you share things with...but what do you do if it's spread and you know who it was, there's no recourse especially as no matter the context it's celebrated.

This.
Crackers crack.
(for whatever this means nowadays, that's another often debated matter)

PS: Congratulations, mini drama is a nice PR stunt for the developer, anyway :)

"For the commenter on CSDB... I didn't know he was in a cracking group when I let him see the tech demo. This is ridiculous, I have to address CSDB nonsense here because of their closed shop policy."

Can yous let Kodiak in? =)

Some people like to think that people who make games today are somehow not part of the scene. Silly indeed :)

Feels like deja-vu - a whole drama war already blew up about Parallaxian on Lemon years ago. This is the famous game preview which 'invented' CIA timer-based NMI interrupts and invented 'toggle-plexing' and invented vertical parallax..

Doesn't make sense that someone can work with scene members and give previews to crackers and then pretend like they never heard of anything like this before. Totally valid to be mad that a trusted partner leaked their preview though. Just not the denigration of CSDB or releases in general.

Nobody is questioning the natural order of things, games get cracked/released etc. It's fun and part of the c64.

I don't think it really does cause harm to full products, especially with the year of grace, so no complaints here.

The thing that didn't sit well was the faux justification.

Either support creators and encourage or take the view that you'll screw them over for any reason you can stick it to the man etc.

Not reaching out and confirming that it is a dead project, how hard would it have been?

I would hope for some collaboration around making things for a platform that is very difficult to justify supporting.

After all less nice things being made = less things to show your skill/get fun out of cracking/packaging, surely that's not in any ones interest unless the goal is to kill the platform and spoil everyone's fun, even your own?
