Best SID instrument?
Well, topic kinda says all.
The tune itself doesn't have to be good at all, only the instrument(s). ;)
'Impulse' by Taki has some pretty awesome 16x drums.
And just to make it a bit less complicated to choose instruments: NO SAMPLES.

The lead instrument in the Ocean Loader tune v1 by Mr. Galway is ace, but the way it's used counts for a lot too.. Love the way he phrases the melody..
Personally I just love the old Hubbard tam sound.. That's cool, but I'm probably pretty alone on the preference :)

The hammond organ was AWESOME.
The filter plus the "nonstandard" tuning (CGKOTY, it would've been "nonstandard" if it weren't made on a C64), gives it a real 1930-40's feeling, like an old nightclub somewhere in a dark alley... |

Sorry for the bump, but this tune not only sounds great, it actually sounds a bit "peculiar", in the way that it uses BFJNSX-tuning instead of CGKOTY, so it's tuned +30 cents (CGKOTY was made for NTSC AFAIK, and on PAL it's -60 cents). |
| |
Laxity
Registered: Aug 2005 Posts: 459 |
What do you mean, the tuning makes the song sound peculiar?.. Please explain what you mean (and I don't mean the different frequency tables needed for PAL and NTSC systems to have a perfect A-440Hz pitch, 'cause I get that :)..) |
| |
McMeatLoaf
Registered: Jan 2005 Posts: 108 |
I probably should mention that I've got perfect pitch (although a bit "passive) so song not tuned to A440 sounds "peculiar" to me, which means that depending on which tuning is used, it has a different feeling to me, e.g. CGKOTY (on PAL) sounds a lot more "dark and old-school" than AEINRW. :-)
It's more or less a subjective thing... ;-)
|
| |
Laxity
Registered: Aug 2005 Posts: 459 |
I thought as much, otherwise you're comment would have been strange.
Perfect pitch is great for some stuff, but a pain in the ass when the reference isn't perfect relative to your internal pitch :) .. I wonder if there's such a thing as perfect time .. "yeah, it's a 100 bmp, but when played on a NTSC system it feels like I'm having a heart attack.. Runs to bloddy fast" ..

Edwin van Santen/20CC - Rettekettet, (nice Drumsounds, i love the 20CC Snare...!!!)
Ramiro Vaca - Turrican Highscore, (the bass and drum combination sounds really great, it's Track 3!)
Chris Hülsbeck - Katakis (Denaris). (the Highscore Track, it sounds but easy but i love the snare of the TFMX Routine and the melody...)
Chris Hülsbeck & Ramiro Vaca - R-Type (the chords at the beginning of track 02)
Chris Hülsbeck - Danger Freak (Main Menu Track, Chris used the same routine in this musical piece and i like the snaresounds, too... He wrote sayed somewhere in a interview that the new routine sounds like a sample, ok, it will never sound like a sample but it sounds cool, i think.. The chords in Danger Freak music sounds cool to me, too)
JCH/Vibrants - Nilfisk (some great snare sounds at the beginning, JCH has always a lot of great snare in his tracks, awesome)
Jeff - 8th Frame (the percussions are amazing, good job, Jeff)
Scortia - Equinox (same amazing chord sounds)
Michael Hendriks/Fame - Baby Jack (the title track is really great)
Danke/Censor - Funky A Soul (nice snare)
Guy Shavitt - 3d WorldBoxing (nice intro, like it!!)
Duck Larock/Camelot - Andagt, MadamDuck (don't know why, i like his style... :)
Drax/MON/Vibrants - Crooner (really, really great melody... amazing!)
Drax/MON/Vibrants - Faarhuud (the bass line, amazing!)
Markus Schneider/X-Ample - Strike Force Introtune (one of the best and shortest intro tunes ever)
Metal/Vibrants - Deaf Deff (Metal's amazing Avantgarde Intro tune!)
Jesper Olsen/Vibrants - Better/Weird (nice snare, nice melody, everythign is nice in this track!)
Shogoon/Taboo - For Tribute94 (nice relaxing tune and nice sounds)

Nice ones folks :)
http://www.c64.org/HVSC/MUSICIANS/G/Galway_Martin/Times_of_Lore (subtune1) - Actually, it emulates guitar, I learned so many things about playing back in the time and that's it. Different picking positions. Switching neck and bridge pickups. Some applied picking techniques. Realistic bending and vibrato. You can hear frets as you pull down your fingers on the fretboard. Even distorted bass guitar. Tried it all while playing along...
http://www.c64.org/HVSC/MUSICIANS/G/Galway_Martin/Game_Over.sid - despite the fact that it probably never sounded exact on my 8580 SID, the filter mayhem (especially at the end) was the most inspiring thing I've ever heard on C64. Emulators kill that tune.
http://www.c64.org/HVSC/MUSICIANS/T/Tel_Jeroen/Invest_intro - Lots of non-C64 multispeed sounds from the golden age. You know the man.
http://www.c64.org/HVSC/MUSICIANS/A/Agemixer/Da_Shit_Eastwood_J.. - Can you hear ya violins and smell the dung? yeee-haa :)
http://www.c64.org/HVSC/MUSICIANS/A/Agemixer/National_Park_jong.. - Pretty minimal but as far as you can go with djideridoo, it is pretty close.
http://www.c64.org/HVSC/MUSICIANS/J/Jammer/Broken_Circuits_Part.. - Lots of my fav 'better-than-sampling' contemporary sounds were created by Jammer (Mr Marvellous, Hot Mommas, Club Stylier, Floatee, my Own Hyperspace etc-etc-etc) but Black Spark tunes contain a shocking amount of SID rape, even for me :)
http://www.c64.org/HVSC/MUSICIANS/W/Wacek/Artificial_Intelligen.. - Among so many inspiring sounds by Wackee, the intro of this one is unearthly. Can you hear the SID bleeding?
Ghost Escapes Body (Kjell Nordbo) - At the end of this demo, the C64 dies (deletes memory realtime) while SID is still engaged and screaming digital agony as it tries to find meaning in between the irreversibly collapsing data patterns. One of the most staggering moments I've ever experienced on C64. After it reached SID registers and sounds stopped, I stared at the blank screen for a while before turning off the power.
http://www.c64.org/HVSC/MUSICIANS/T/Taxim/Keine_Musik.sid - Gritty SID at best, oooozes guitar riffs.
http://www.c64.org/HVSC/MUSICIANS/R/Randall/Ill_Be_a_Pimp_in_Ca.. - Hi-Finesse, great clarity and mixing. Okay this thread is not about melody but what a catchy one for that! |

sure thing i forgot a lot, forgive me:
Intrinsic - in terms of clarity and mixing, i'd say Conrad is the master. almost all of his tunes, except the earliest, are the very definition of hi-fi sound. here, for example.
Automatas - _all_ instruments are unbelievable. not a chipmusic anymore, but a piece of real electronica.
Last Aproach - same applies to this one.
Drop it - and this one. suffice to say it has won an mp3 compo on some party.
Egy Szippantas a jobol - the kick drum makes me envious. also check: Together Before.
Patterns - the whole drumset, snare in particular, makes me a retard.
Evolver 6581 - ORGEL sounds in here, well, what can i say.
Manky - The Toilet Warrior - scream!!! i'm scared.
Electric Jesus - looking for a completely new sound palette? heeere.
and of course almost everything Linus and Jammer do these days :) |

Haven't thought so much about this, but have to agree with Steppe and PAL on that FAME tune. Listened to it just for the whistle. A very good tune too. Had to check the music driver back then I remember, it does some quick pitch slides checking high notes in the vibrato routine. Clever done and gives the little extra lively expressions in the sound.
Also Cybernoid snare drum (thinking nostalgi, have to come back to new stuff later, thinking Linus:), back in 1988 that was a really good snare. lol ;) |

What a great topic!
I've always liked the ring modulated (?) lead on this one, especially in the bit starting from 3:20...

Back in 1991 it sounded like nothing else I had previously heard coming out of SID. Still one of my all time favorites. |

I agree with pmc, the bass in Sinful is really a double bass like tone... I recently bought a real upright/acoustic bass, and I've had the thought a while ago to remix Sinful with it :) I'm already able to play the main theme, but I had not enough
time recently to start the remix...
On percussion side, the bassdrum, clap and cymbal together is very realistic in Thiefklang (by Gangstar in Plush demo).
Apart from realistic tones, the ringmodulated sweep of the relaxation part in the middle of Compleeto is very unique before doubled-fast-bassy part. I can smell it, not joking, I feel a smell of animal corpse while listening to it ;S
(Interesting, but sometimes there's interference between different human senses. We often feel a tone 'materialistic' or we visualize it inside. At least me and some of my friends tell this.)

Nearly forgot about awesome sounding classic:
http://hvsc.perff.dk/MUSICIANS/O/Orcan/Mexico.sid - orgy of brilliantly filtered percussion
Add to that anything by LMan - it's no use to focus on separate instruments and tunes as almost everything shines in that department :D |

Those LMan tunes... I can recognise many classic synths and sounds from there. And they're done on a damn SID. :O
Thanks for the tip Jammer!

Drums of Tune 1 were pretty impressive at its time and still belongs to best no-sample/digi/multispeed drums. probably (did not look) does write more than once per frame but at least it's not necessary to call Player more than once per frame.
Ingame tune (5) has also pretty neat instruments |

Wow!
A bit similar to my Rocco Siffredi flute (yeah, I know how it sounds xD) but definitely better and more breathy ;) |

Not very special in it self, but
Break Street
Is that an arpeggio at 2:04? Not very common for a 1984 tune.. |

Yeah. Coincidentally we're having a conversation about earliest arps over on chipmusic.org and I brought up Bob Landwehr's stuff. (and Galway's Kong Strikes Back which is the same year) |

That snare sounds like Rockmonitor, and it is pure 6x speed tune. Good work Jan! |
