What are great Music and Art Collections?
I`m working on a C64 collection for Xbox at the moment.
I`d like to also include some Music and graphics collections, but there are so many!
Any ideas about collections that should absolutely be included?
(With 'collections' i mean self starting Menus or Slide-shows etc. not Disks with separate Sids and Pictures!)

well in all honesty, i really cant see you being able to put such a thing together without compiling it yourself.
there are several "gallery" style demos and disks knocking around, but in reality, none of the ones you can download will truly be representative of "the best the c64 can offer".
art and music tastes are just far too subjective and diverse on the c64 to provide you with what you seek. What would make it onto my top 10 art disk for example may not make it onto someone elses.

I see what You mean. Ofcourse any selection will always be subjective, no matter if I choose one or someone else does.
But I think that a lot of people over here have greater knowledge about what's 'out there' than I have..
What I`m hoping for is to get an idea of some kind of 'Average-chart', like the 'Top-Demos' section here.
So the more 'subjective' opinions the better. Sure there are some collections most people agree on?
As for 'best representation' ; you've got a point there. So if anyone feels strongly about certain SIDS or Art, mention it too ;)
Thanks in Advance for any opinions

All (B)ears
This is a nice music colly. (yes music by me!).
But you have to choose the tunes yourself in the menu part.
Good luck with your project!

yes you could do that. but does that really give the the "best of the best" of c64 art?
not really, when my set of unused PD shooter graphics can be listed as high 13th and there's not a Bob Stevenson, Paul Docherty, Steve Thompson link there at all in the top 10.
you would be much better advised to look at the collections on here by artist not by collections themselves. only then will you really see what's on offer.

ohh troll hat firmly in place now is it groepaz?
is it really the job of a mod on here to incite people to downvote i wonder? you just don't seem to be able to help yourself.
i do hope the other mods and admins are now taking notice of your change of status on this thread.
@Carrion how you think that list is representative of the best in c64 art with no Steve Thompson in it is quite beyond me tbh.
or wayne schmidt, Bob Stevenson, Paul Docherty, Jim Sachs or indeed anyone else who pushed pixels before 1994. all these square up perfectly well against the best on that list.
hardly representative when all it shows is how little anyone looks and votes on anything prior to 2000.

no it is not, no idea why you have such strange ideas. if you look at the list, its obvious that its based on way too few votes for way too few productions and people. and there is only one way to correct that: vote more. |

IMO he is kinda trolly and annoying bastard, but he is right about the unreliability of ranks based on voting. It's best to get advice from people and that is exactly what Asphodel did. The best thing we can do for him is to give him direct links to the stuff we consider best. Not my mission though. |

I do stand by my statement that you cant see anywhere near all the best art on the c64 by seaching graphic collections by rank.
however, if you search artists you will get:
http://noname.c64.org/csdb/toplist.php?type=scener&subtype=%284..
now if you ignore the ranks (because of the aforesaid lack of voting on old stuff and sceners)work you way down the list and view these peoples art, THEN you will find most of the "best of the best" in the way of c64 art.
also go to http://c64pixels.com/main.php, register (free) and systematically go through the artists on there you will also see most of the best in c64 art. I say "most" because there are some missing persons. (Veto, remember to add SIR :) )

@STE: Mind that this site mainly focuses on the (former underground) scene, also graphic-wise, so people who were mainly known for doing commercial game graphics are under-represented.
Advise to anyone: Ignore those vote-lists, they are crap. |

the best art collection is not only about gfx. its a kind of demo so the overal design, + music + concept to bind this together are important things

@rough
prior to going commercial, SIT, BOB, Dokk, and myself were, with Sarge, probably the main contributors to the original "underground" (if you wish to call it that) graphic scene in europe. Excepting of course in the UK it wasn't "underground" at all really, as CNET was very much well publicised in Zzap.
@carrion
ok fair enough that's your take on it. mine would be best graphic collections should be best art collection ow its "best demo". same as i don't believe that pictures with music should be allowed in graphic compos because the music can bias the judgement of the graphic one way or another. |

@STE'86 (music in pics) We don't play music in GFX during comeptitions at Forever Parties. And I'm sure 99% of other parties don't do that either. |

One of the best artists on the c64 is Kjell Nordbo so something from him should definitely be included, preferably all of them.

Forces in Alliance
The Big Leap

cant say that often enough. not only one of the best, but also one of the very few who did actual art on the c64. Pioniers are lonely. RIP

Speed - features exclusive multispeed + digi music by members of Onslaught and Shape. Wrapped in a great outfit by Mermaid and Stryyker.
Album of the Year - this collection contains 70+ exclusive and/or unreleased SID. I worked on finding gems unreleased by the likes of Matt Gray, Duck LaRock, Danko, Moppe, Laxity and more. |

Yes, a nice idea actually, to continue it on every year. Same with Demo of the Year (or Singles Collection) etc. |

Okay, great!! Thanks for the replies all! Sorting stuff out at the moment, and there`s indeed some very excellent (and usable) collections!
I`m still in doubt a bit about the 'Art collections'. Problem is that, as far as I can tell, there`s quite some difference here in 'Classic' stuff and 'recent' work. I`d like of course to include collections that are representative for the 'hey-days' of the C64. But With all these 'new' screen-modes, and great Art that follows it, it`s hard to choose some good collections. (I`ve seen some marvelous work here!)
