Vice 3.3 no alpha blending
So finally got around to compiling Vice 3.3 under linux and found alpha blending is gone. I can only assume it's one of those cases where the guy that added that feature is long gone and it was a hairy mess that nobody wants to untangle.
In any case it's a shame - it worked much better than it had any right to! With 3.1 I get nearly rock solid PAL scrolling on my 60Hz screen here in the etats unee. With 3.3 it's all herky jerky...
Anyway, I'm just curious if anyone else misses that feature (or even knew about it!), and if any Vice devs have it in the back of their mind to reimplement at some point? |

In windows 7 I cannot change the monitor refresh rate from 60 to 50 Hz, but I could when I connected it to a Mac with a hdmi cable. Don't know if that will work in the US. Haven't tried it with Linux yet. |

using 50Hz with VICE isnt actually a good idea at this point... you'll get more problems than with 60Hz =P |

FWIW the temporal blending in the Cocoa version worked and looked great, a few years ago. |

Is that specific for 50Hz and/or Linux, or does it apply to other refresh rates as well?
Currently I run 100Hz refresh in Windows, and have been getting reasonably smooth movement in Vice, with some occasional hiccups, but much better than 60hz for sure.
Haven't upgraded to the latest Vice though. |

its unrelated to the OS, the audio/video sync code is freaking out when the hosts display frequency is lower than the c64s. hopefully we can fix this some day :) 100Hz is fine :) |

I think you can have an external monitor at 50 Hz while the primary one refreshes more often. Then there may be no problem. |

I for one would hate such blurriness caused by it even though apparent motion seems smoother.
Well that's why I said it works better than it has any right to. You should try it before dismissing it - it works surprisingly well. As for added motion blur, that's pretty minor and infinitely better than the jerkiness. Maybe that's just personal preference tho...
@Groepaz: There are no side effects, at least on my machine, when setting the window manager to "skip compositing" or whatever for Vice. It definitely works, and I'll keep my 3.1 build around for that one feature. |

Late at night, after a few drinks and some sticky-icky I even get alpha-blending in current VICE. SID emulation also sounds better somehow. |

Yeah I guess I expected that. Well, anything that makes us shlep stuff over to the real hardware more often can't be all bad... |
