pixel stretch effect

Hello! I'm a motion graphics designer and I'm trying to track down the origin of a specific "trendy" effect. It's the "pixel stretch" or "smear" effect, where the a single line of vertical pixels are stretched to the edge of the screen.
Like this:

I think I remember seeing this in old c64 (or atari/nes) demos. Do you know what it is called in the c64 community, know of any examples that use it, or when it people started using it?

Thanks!

I'm not sure this effect has a real 'scene' name but one thing I'm sure about, it's that this effect wasn't first used on the C-64.
AFAIK, it was first done on the Amiga using the copper chip.
On the C64 it's a question of hard-coding (so without VIC tricks).

One example:

The last part in Dutch Breeze uses it as a logo-presentation effect.

Wasn't this referred to as a Flood-Fill?

I remember lots and lots of Amiga demos had this effect.. always vertical though, not horizontal like the Dutch Breeze part. ..I wonder why...
This was back in the late 80's afair.

It was most likely made using the blitter which facilitated ultra fast line draw, rectangular fills and movements. ..well ultra fast compared to doing the same using the CPU alone :)

IIRC the credits part of Tower Power also had a nice and quite variable flood filler.

Flood filling means the way you usually fill an area in a gfx-tool like Photoshop or Amica Paint. You know, click on a pixel, and then all the pixels connected to it that has the same color will also be filled. Only pixels in another color than the pixel you clicked on will stop the "flood".
