Oswald: Sooner or later MP3 groups have to crack protections too, Sony's rootkits for example. :) Just joking, I'm sure it isn't that complicated to grab the tracks digitaly under Linux or something. And another joke: imagine you're doing a Britney Spears album firstie, well, that must bring some fame for an "MP3 cracker", it even may worth more points in Gamer's Guide. :) |

And Oswald; I guess its only a matter of interest if you like music or not, the Mp3 scene is nice, and at the same time, a bore. The C64 scene did start it all, and it shows. This is where theres a community among the machine. Cant say I saw that on other platforms.
The Apple II had a pretty robust pirating scene prior to the release of the C=64... complete with cracktros. Nothing compared to what sceners did on the Commodore 64, though.
The C=64 was the right computer at the right time. Affordable, versitile... PLUS, the world was getting smaller. The C=64 warez scene brought software distribution and phreaking in to sync (thanks to MCI and Sprint's long distance calling codes) so widespread dispersion of software could become an affordable (free) reality.
Truly a unique phoenomenon; the only one that kind of comes close is the Amiga (close, but not quite).

Wow, Mr. Wax died? When and how? He wasn't very old either. Didn't he get married too? Had a child? I spoke with him on IRC once in awhile, but it was a long time ago so it's hard to remember the details. |
