Tac-2 with Vice?
I need to use a joystick with Vice, and since I really hate all high-tech PC flight joysticks with hundreds of buttons and levers I'd prefer using one of my trustworthy Tac-2 joysticks.
Is there a way to connect the Tac-2 to the PC??
Thanks for any info...

Sure, you can build yourself a little adaptor for the gameport, I did it myself. WinNT based OSes will only allow one joystick at a time, but if you're using Win98 you can use two joysticks simultaneously on the gameport.
Here's the circuit, give it a try:

I'll check it out. Thanks! |

I actually believe there are webshops that sell gameport-enabled versions of classic joysticks. I've seen a Pro 5000 in 'real life', but don't have an url handy right now... I'll try to find the guy I saw it with on irc and get back to you. |

AFAIK you can even order the adapter from the zipfile above somewhere on the net. I forgot the URL, though.
But if you're skilled at soldering, building the adaptor shouldn't take more than about one hour. The prices for the electronic components are comparably cheap, I think I payed about 10 Euros back then. |

I've located most of the needed components in a local electronics shop and the price for the components are quite reasonable per component, unfortunately a one hundred minimum was required for one of the components, and I only need a few. Thus, the total price was higher than first expected. I'll have to look elsewhere.. ;)
I found this site:
http://w5.cs.uni-sb.de/~stahl/com/index_uk.html
I sent a mail to Christopher Stahl and he told me that the production has been stopped. They are concentrating on the development of the next generation, the USB competitor.
Quote: "It is fully digital, no calibration, and can be connected to notebooks and macs. You can combine two interfaces and play with 4 joysticks."
However, it will take some time until the USB competitor is finished. But I'm really looking forward to it.. ;)

Yeah, that was exactly the site I was referring to! And the USB interface sounds promising, maybe that finally allows to use more than one joystick on NT based OSes. |
